I was fixing some lunch and looked out the kitchen window. There was a single critter out in the field headed toward the house. It looked too husky for a deer so I put the glasses on it. Turned out to be a bighorn ram. He was moving right along headed toward my house. We see sheep from time to time but always in groups, Never a single.

Hmmmmmm he has a collar and I don't have a sheep tag. That might not work out too good for me.

He ended up taking a left turn. Waded the river, crossed the road, and went up a hill that I would fear for my life if I had to follow him.

So the game dept could follow his movement? I see lots of the ewes with collars and transmitters. This is the first ram I have seen with a collar. These sheep are the local game dept pet project.

Are they rare or is the Game Commission just hunting something to spend money on?

Are they rare or is the Game Commission just hunting something to spend money on? There aren't very many over the entire west. They live in very limited pockets that have the right environment for them. Tags are by a very limited draw. Here in Oregon they are a once in a life time draw. This area they give out one tag a year. The odds of drawing it are about 450 to 1. I just happen to live right on the edge of the range of this herd so I see them fairly regular.

I seen several of them along the roads in northern Colorado a few years ago. I figured that meant they were common. But yes it was rough country.

That’s a nice ram from what I can tell. I bet that collar would get you a few visitors. It’s great you get to see them like that Dave. Not many people are lucky enough to have that in their backyard.

Oregon gives out a total of 71 sheep tags. There are 66 tags for residents and 5 for non residents. They are spread over 31 specific area and time hunts. About half the areas have two separate seasons, like Sept 1-15 and Sept 16-30. So there aren't 31 areas with sheep. My area it is about 15 miles by road through the Burnt River canyon and the area goes about 3 miles each side of the canyon. They only give out one tag in this area.

We used to have Elk with collars like that. To my knowledge most of the ones with collars died of old age long after the collar went dead. So if you knew when the collar was put on it is possible it isn't working now.

There were more than a few collared mountain lions and problem bears in California that I've known of that mysteriously drown in the lake. All we can figure is that the radio waves the collar transmitted made them really thirsty. I also know of a bear that used to travel a pretty good distance that would come down from the high country every fall to feast on calves that suddenly changed his ways and grazed peacefully within the borders of a ten thousand acre ranch for several years... at least that's what they thought until they found his collar zip tied to a longhorn cow...

There has been some discussion locally about how deep in the Snake River a wolf would be able to transmit from.
