I have $30+ a roll in mine off a decent cutting of 3+ rolls to the acre. I fertilize at a rate of 80 lbs N, 10 lbs P, and 70 lbs K and some sulfur to the acre, right at $400 a ton spread. Not very pleased with how the numbers are adding up, guess I need to have a couple of rolls weighed and figure by the pound.

Are you figuring fuel and labor??

I just done the math on the cutting last weekend. 19.63 roll in fertilizer fuel and supplies. With labor it goes up to 22.13 no depreciation on equipment is added.

Well I put $800 "2 ton" in fertilizer only Darryl. I fertilize according to what is needed and what I'm told for maximum hay production per acre. The math is really simple to figure even for me.

How many acres ? Is this Bahia or Bermuda. If Bahia it's too much fert the sweet spot for it is about 40 to 50 units

$50-$55 per 4x6 roll depending on yield. $3 rent, $30/$35 fertilizer, and $18 cut, rake, and roll. Any stem maggots or army worms and the price goes up as well.

While you can not go wrong with trying to match soil test . I would look at the blend you are using. Typically you should be around 45$ acre in fertilizer. You go back an add at Least 50# N per ton of hay removed, alot of folks recommend putting you P and K in early spring or fall. Because it's like lime and takes time to be taken up. If it were mine I would comeback before next rain with about 70# on N that should run you around 400$ . Then your avgs should get better.

For example, your test says you need 100n 50p 100k , that is what they estimate the nutrients needed for the crop your growing. Most will say split this over 3 application. So you would apply 33-16-33. You need 50n for every ton so you add that to your base 33-16-33 if your getting 3 cuts. You don't know how many people I see that put the soil test rates out every single time the fertilize and wonder why they have so money tied up or just say I cannot afford to do that and give me triple 18

I follow you Darryl. I split my fertilizer into 3 applications. First application is 1/3 of the recommended N, All of the P, and 1/2 the K. 2nd application is 1/3 of the N. 3rd application is 1/3 N and 1/2 the K. That’s if my pocketbook holds out. One good thing is once you get your P built up it doesn’t take as much.
Problem is, I can’t get anywhere close to $45/ac doing this. I’d love to hear any ideas. And I genuinely mean that.

And I genuinely mean that. 100# per acre of urea is 355.ton or 36.89 per acre 100# per acre of ammonia nitrate is 325 a ton 47.04 per acre I prefer AN over urea and timing is different but cost can be reduced trying to incorporate it into one or 2 of the applications especially if you can get 4 or 5 cutting. Fertilizer cost are supposed to be getting lower as an Outlook from what I have read.

Costs me $45 a 4x5 roll by the time I stack it in my barn. Figuring direct costs and time/ equipment.

I understand that if you are selling or hiring out , I figure labor on that stuff like I would pay a hand to do it , 12 to 15 an hour I understand where you are coming from but you can’t do that and be honest about what it costs. For me my business is running my tractors for other people. If I take them out of their field to put in mine I have to figure it at what I charge them for. You wouldn’t take that 100hp NH up the road and disc a guys field for $15 an hr. When you sell shingles to someone you cover all your overhead not just what the guy delivering them makes.
