If you think your having a bad day .
Just before Thanksgiving I had 2 cows go down . Symptoms were just like milk fever. I had put out several hundred pounds of in shell peanuts. That's the only thing different I have done. Both died sitting cow fashion in their sleep. Last week I found another old cow down . Obvious struggle and put her out of her misery. All three have been here 10 yrs or so and probably in upper teens age wise. I consulted several vets after the fact and no one had a clue as to what it could be. Sunday afternoon I was putting out hay and my young jersey cow didn't get up . Weak rear-ended I gave la & banimine before bed. During the night she got up and moved to the other hay pile . This morning I found her cast and Bloated. I put her out of misery. Loaded her in the trailer to try and find a vet to do a necropsy. Headed to work and I smoked a deer .bent my ranch hand style bumper. Couldn't find a vet able to do it so I drove 2 hrs to Auburn University. Visual part of exam is back with nothing out of the normal. Waiting on the other test to see if something is in the herd or just bad luck.

Dang, sorry to hear that. Extreme weather can dredge up stuff/contaminants in the soil that's long been buried. Hope the results identify something - as opposed to just bad luck.
Didn't know it was possible to ruin a Ranch Hand. Wow.

Not that I'm aware of. The Dr at the University where they came from feeds the same ones. They have been gone for a 3 weeks so current issues should not have any bearing. The preliminary results says she was open and being she was fb jersey and on the smaller side the bull could have been too rough on her.

Not lead, with lead they will stand in a corner pushing their head against a post grinding their teeth.

Not lead, with lead they will stand in a corner pushing their head against a post grinding their teeth. We had a couple cows that just looked like they collapsed and died under their own weight, where there were only 30 some head in a breeding pasture, and not necessarily checked every day. Vet said it was likely lead poisoning, like from battery plates. I did find a piece of black plastic that looked like it was a piece from an old tractor battery. Covered that area with dirt and haven't had another one since. I think symptoms probably vary with the concentration. Hope to not gain more experience on the subject. www.beefproducer.ca/lead-poisoning-in-cattle/

I am so sorry to hear this happened to you M-5. I know it must be really grinding on you, worrying about what could have happened. I would not take this well myself. It is very hard to sit and wait to find out what happened. I hope they can give you a good answer and what to do to make it go away.

Thank you, I do worry and I have been checking the rest pretty frequently. I culled hard the last year and only have a handful left. But I have had 9 calves born this last week and expect a few more this week and almost all of them have been heifers. That helps alot.

M-5, keep us informed what is going on with your cattle. I guess with all the people taking off for Christmas, it is tough to get a quick answer. Seems like the most trouble come during a weekend or holidays when you need help fast.

Still do not have the final report. Spoke to the Dr at AU this morning. Calcium levels were marginal negative bvd ,coxidia , low pop of parasites ,mag normal , still waiting on lead test , she chuckled when I said it would come back 40 caliber. Still no definitive answer.
