Excede is an antibiotic that is specifically recommended for injection in the cartilage at the base of the ear. It is used a lot for foot rot, BRD and vaginal/uterine infections. I have gotten it under prescription by the individual does to treat retained placenta. They still recommend SQ in the neck I think excede is the exception. EXCEDE Sterile Suspension may also be administered as a single subcutaneous injection in the middle third of the posterior aspect of the ear at a dosage of 3.0 mg CE/lb (6.6 mg CE/kg) BW (1.5 mL sterile suspension per 100 lb BW). Did you mean to post it as behind the shoulder. Sorry. I meant in the neck for most vaccines, hormones and antibiotics. The EXCEDE has been an exception. I inject mostly in the neck just anterior to the point of the shoulder.

Behind the shoulder is still recommended for SQ and IM but EXCEDE is an exception. The preferred location is into the cartilage at the base of the ear. VAANGUS, Do you remember what antibiotic the vet used. EXCEDE would be possible for this kind of injury. It stays a long time in their system. I am very familiar with Excede and use it as needed. Your statement of BEHIND the shoulder is what I am questioning. BQA recommends in FRONT of the shoulder in the triangle of the neck area unless it's changed since I last took a class last fall.

Indeed. I meant in the neck. Just in front of the shoulder. The exception to that is the thick LA 200/300 antibiotics. I give those in that loose skin behind the front leg. It is given SQ. There is no meat damage. Just pull the skin out before injection. My guess is that BQA still recommends injections go into the neck in front of the shoulder. Despite the comment made by the vet above who stated that the new practice is to inject behind the ear. I suspect the vet was specifically referring to EXCEDE. But maybe there is a change headed our way.

I agree that would work but is it according to Beef Quality Assurance? I stay away from recommending anything else. Newbee's may not understand and want to give all shots behind the leg.

They need to follow BQA. However, if clearly defined, it is good to have knowledge of the option of the loose skin behind the leg. Lots of vets use that area. When giving LA 200/300, due to volume and thickness, it becomes necessary for the consideration of the cow to spread the 10 mL doses out.

Just took a BQA class last week as my certification ran out a few years ago. SQ is recommended in triangle in front of the shoulder for most all vaccines and other shots for treatments. We had a vet use Excede behind the ear, when we had a couple of cattle that had gotten sick at a pasture.

I'm unrolling 1 bale of good hay every afternoon and it's a free for all. Hopefully the cows will get the trash and liquid feed cleaned up where I can get them moved before someone has an accident.

This must be the way to do it. Haven't heard any complaints about the imports.
