I feel some cows have very rich milk and will make a calf sluggish because it's more than they can handle at one time. If you supplement the cow that goes straight to a nursing calf also, this is just a guess on my part. Possums are one of the ugliest creatures known to man kind. I suspect that was part of the problem. Daisy was awesome about letting me try to get Dixie latched on but I did give her cubes to help keep her occupied - not a lot but 3 times a day. That said, Daisy was wanting her calf to nurse in the worst way & any time I'd work with them milk would just pour out of her teats, down her back legs & shooting out the front ones so a lot of the super rich milk was lost. I'm just glad Dixie is doing so well. Poo a little runny this afternoon but better than impacted and she'll regulate in a few days.

Woohoo, she's joined the herd! Doing great & Daisy's happy to be out of prison. And be nice about the freakishly huge ear tag - she'll grow into it:)

Glad all of your efforts are paying off. Hopefully she remains healthy. Not easy to keep a preemie going.

Little update on Dixie, my preemie. She's a little pistol and thinks she owns the place! Heard the constant frantic bellow of a mama in distress one night: Where's my baby!!! Grabbed a flashlight & drove to the central pasture to investigate and it was Daisy, her mama. Drove out to the last place I saw her and (condensed version) eventually found her. Too far to walk her so put her on my lap in the Polaris & drove her back for a happy reunion & what appeared to be a stern lecture from Daisy. Evidently Dixie thought the ride was big fun and now tries to get in the Polaris allll the time. She's happy, healthy and growing like a weed - couldn't ask for a better outcome and optimistic she'll continue to thrive.

Such a great outcome for a baby calf. You sound a lot like me when it comes to the calves. I take it personal if they don't make it as I try to do all that I can. When there is trouble with the mom and baby, there is always a chance that the calf won't make it. Even if it means that I have to feed the baby myself. I give the mom all the chances to take care of them, but often the cow will run from me and the baby runs with her. It is just easier to bring them where I can get my hands on them when it is time to eat.
That is such a cute little calf. I will be anxious to see her when she get really big. Dixie is a cute name for her.

She looks to be doing well! Started eating cubes and growing so fast! No raspy breathing or any signs of under development. Fingers crossed!

I would say that you are in the "Safe Zone" now. You did a great job with her.
