We are using a garlic mineral in 1 pasture that we have had pinkeye problems in the last 3 years in a row. The cows that are getting the garlic definitely have less flies than the heifers across the road that don't have the garlic available. I haven't noticed any face flies on the cows that are getting the garlic and there is less mosquitoes around them too. In general flies haven't been as bad this year as some but I think it definitely helps and we will probably use it in that pasture again next year.

All of our mature bulls are together in one pasture, just getting hay and doing a little winter grazing. Still feeding everything mineral with garlic in it, but the bulls haven't been poured or treated for lice, and everything else has. Normally, anything that hasn't been treated for lice will have lots of hair rubbed off by now, but these bulls aren't rubbing a bit, and they're doing good on just the none-too-great diet they're on. The other bunches: bred cows, bred heifers, cull cows, weaned calves, and yearling bulls, are all getting some alfalfa, and their mineral consumption is down considerably. The mature bulls aren't getting alfalfa, and their consumption of the garlic mineral is fairly high.
It's been said that the garlic will help, or take care of, other parasites, and it's looking like that is probably right.

I don't know if this counts or not, but each day I drink a home made smoothie. Each one has a rounded teaspoon of cinnamon in it. It took me a while to get to that amount. I do it for health reasons, but did not know that mosquitoes were not fond of it. When my husband goes out without mosquito dope on, he is covered in whelps. Lot of rain and standing in every tractor wheel track left over from the mud in the winter. When I go out, I may get three or four bites.
So, maybe the cinnamon has something to do with it!

The mineral we've been getting lately has a very strong garlic smell to it. Will stink up the whole damn shed if you close the doors on it.
