Another thing you have to watch for is cattle that have never had to drink from a pond in our black gumbo type soil. More than once I have had a new animal bog up from getting in to deep. Calves can get in trouble too but most seem to learn from mom to just ease in the front legs. I have noticed the cows know the best and safest part of the pond to enter. I wish I could water from troughs but it is just not feasible with 100 mouths drinking in 100 degree weather and no well to draw from. Before I sold off the rest of the herd, it would have been ridiculous to water them from troughs. It could have been done, but it would have been quite a burden on the well. Prior to selling, I would keep a trough in the working pen, so they all knew what it was/is. The primary source of water, for them, all these years has been a creek that runs through this place as well as one of those boggy muddy water holes, up on the hill. The new place has a nice pond, at the far end of the property. At one time, many, many years ago, you can see remnants of fence where whomever had the place, ran the cows in such a fashion that it funneled them towards the pond.

Got my little bull back in the easy way. When I was shuffling them around I had a heifer in the pen with them that was ready for the breeder, so I also loaded her planning on dropping her first at the breeder, then at the at the farm when she was ready. With the bull out I decided to bring her home knowing a little studly guy that was friends with the cute girl couldn't stay away, especially when she was wearing that certain perfume. Sure enough they found each other that evening from across the fence and they bedded down next to each other that night. The wife walked out with a bucket of feed the next morning and they both followed her to the gate. A little feed on the ground and the guy came right back in. I guess she gets to stay another month as that's when the next calf will be weaned.

Looking at a larger place some distance away, do not relish the thought of having to move the cattle or belongings.
