I've worn a couple of Goldenrods out stretching HT.The teeth on the jaws let the wire slip. By far tho, real Goldenrods are way better than the generic versions you find at places like TSC and McCoys Builders. They ain't worth a sheeit. When you wear one out grind what's left of the teeth off Weld on a new layer with at least a 70 tensile strength rod. Grind it back down and cut in teeth with a band saw. Just grooves perpendicular to the bite work fine. Credit fence jr.

Pick up a 3 hook one and you will throw the others out. Ever now and then we end up buying some three jawed ones cause that's all they have. First thing I do is cut the third jaw off and throw it away. Dittos. It's nice to have something a little shorter to go in the 4 wheelers tool box, but we're Sandhills on our south end and hard ground on our north. They might work better somewhere else, but I haven't figured out why.

The stays do seem to help some, but the cows usually keep the bottom of them so bent up that it's debatable whether they are worth the cost of not. I use them in the fence that keeps cows out of my yard. Always! But I do use them a lot as a temporary fix. Well, permanent because I never take them off after the fence is tightened. I spray them with WD40, stick a screwdriver in the loop and they twist right on. Fence says you know what the hell your talking about. The old man taught me the wd40 trick about maybe 40 years ago. Except with him it was dunking the end in a bucket of used moter oil. Since we've used everything from wd40 to diesel. You won't believe the difference a little lubricant will make until you've tried it. On a good tight fence the stays will just about fall in.

I use the third jaw a lot. Typically in the woods. Seems I can't pull enough slack to make the fence tight in one pull. Always shit catching the wire, vines, briars, limbs, you name it. With the third hook I can hook it pull some slack, walk down the line and detangle and go pull more without having to unhook and lose any tension. Works for me.

Hadn't seen one with 3 jaws on it before. Use the goldenrod setup and sometimes crimp those bullets and sometimes just mend with wire.
