We took our 2 yr old bull to get him checked before turning him out for fall breeding. Bought him last year in December, he was checked prior to being consigned to that registered sale. We ran him with another younger home raised bull with him until a few months ago pulling him out about a month earlier than the bull in question. The vet said that he did release and that the semen quality was good, however he did not come out of the sheath. He said that he felt around what he could and didn’t feel any evidence of injury. He said that about 1 out of 20 that they check for that, and that we should just watch him to see if it comes out when a cow is in heat. I am sure I have seen him breed in the past but not for a while. We have noticed some heat activity in cows over the summer that should be bred but just 1 that has repeatedly come in after the bull has been out. Is this common for bulls to not extend out of the sheath during a BSE? My concern is that he may have an injury, the vet said that was a possibility but without seeing it out he couldn’t tell.

There was a genetic link discussed in Angus a few years ago.
