Dang! Anaplamosis. But hopefully caught it early enough to recover (other than she'll be a carrier). Temp normal, heart/lungs sound great, due Mid March. Treated with LA and let her join the herd. Still cautiously optimistic - been down this road before. Did a quick read up on that. It's eye opening the management challenges of the different regions, and what doesn't effect other areas. How do you think it was transmitted? Drovers says likely a wood tick. Yup, ticks are the primary vector. As wet as it was this year I was surprised we didn't have as many but it only takes one. Possible but extremely unlikely it can be transmitted by horse flies. Can also be transmitted by not changing needles during vaccination or any other practice that may involve blood (dehorning, etc). Providing mineral with CTC during tick season is one line of defense but whether it's effective is contingent on each cow consuming the optimal ration. Both my cows diagnosed/treated this year are seropositive so, assuming this one makes a full recovery, should be immune to reinfection.

Done! Got the 3 calves that escaped prison down to the barn Monday and for the first time ever, no bawling. Not even from the mamas. True fence line weaning but the calves were also 8-9 months old so I suspect mamas were ready to get rid of 'em, had pretty much kicked them off anyway. Got the 2 late calves down this morning. But the party's over. One of the mamas is a first calf heifer and evidently nobody told her I would eventually gank her baby. Will keep them at the barn with another heifer I pulled from the west 80 due to potentially fatal pneumonia. Treated her a good month ago and she bounced right back but 3 weeks later looked punky again & had a temp so hit her again with Resflor Gold. Didn't respond so loaded her on the trailer & hauled her to the barn. Vet recommended Baytril 100 with Banamine Transdermal but didn't respond to that either. I seriously thought I was going to lose her, even drenched her & gave her ProBios & Nursemate ASAP - anything to get liquid & calories down her. Called the vet back & pretty much insisted on Draxxin. Bingo! She's doing awesome! Clearly not impressed with Baytril 100. Anyone else use it with success? Or, since I bought a 100 ml bottle, can I use it for anything other than respiratory? BTW, cow with anaplasmosis has also made an amazing recovery. I can tell she's put on weight. Of course she's a smart one & leaves the herd, sneaks up to the house for extra cubes

Draxxin is what goes in the dart gun...good stuff. Resflor is a good stand-by. I think the only bottle of Baytril we ever got went out of date and in the trash.

I have been having some luck with a three shot combo of Zactran, Bannamine and a vitamin mix that the vet has made up for his own incoming sale barn calves. I usually don't have many sickness problems but I have had four or five this fall on newborns. Its worked well on all of them but one I had to treat twice.
The calves I weaned on Oct.11 didn't have any problems at all and were pre-conditioned and sold sold this week. They were given a respiratory booster at weaning and some of this vitamin mix. Not sure if that helped or I just got lucky.
