At 5:00 this afternoon there was 18 deer (2 bucks) in the field west of the house. There was 3 deer on the top of the little ridge on the south side of the house. and there was 5 deer (1 buck) coming down off the hill to the east of the house. This morning there was 3 bighorn rams on the ridge to the northwest. We see bands of ewes from time to time but it is a treat to see the rams. And from my house you can't see another house. I am so blessed to live where I am surrounded by wildlife and not people.

I too am surrounded by wildlife, but not as close by as yours is Dave and not as much of it is on 4 legs, has fins or wings..these drunken/doped up 'woodfolk' around here can't stay out of trouble or out of the ditches. I shoulda turned this idiot in..a week before any deer season opened here, he was running 70mph down a Farm-to-market rod, saw this spike up ahead and didn't even slow down. Hit it square on, and threw it in the back of his pickup and hauled it home and cleaned it. That's against the law here without game warden ok'ing it. Dummy then sent this picture around to a lot of people. Asked me if I wanted any of it and I told him HELL NO! (On the real wildlife side tho...Had to tear out another beaver clog this afternoon, in the middle of a 24" X 16' long pipe...10, even 5 years ago, I would be after the sobs day and night, but I just ain't up to it like that no more. If I could do it without flooding my sis's place, I'd just cut my main dam and be without any pond bigger than a mudhole)

The sender of that pic must not watch the Texas game warden show on Animal Planet.

They are definitely in the rut right now. I saw two pretty decent bucks this morning. Both had necks like a beer keg. But I see deer here nearly every day. And it is not unusual to see 20 or more in a day. I had 4 bucks hanging out together here all summer. About the only time I see few deer is when they are busy having fawns. I see a lot of different species other than the deer. We added them up on day last summer. We came up with 48 different species not counting song birds.

My hunters last week limited out in 2 1/2 days of a 4 day hunt, and didn't kill anything the first afternoon. They killed 15 deer in 18 shots this year, last year it took them 24 shots to kill 11 deer. This group covered all the seed and fertilizer cost, next group will cover all the feed cost for the year. Without the deer hunters cattle wouldn't be worth raising around here.

There is literally over a million acres of public land in this county. That gives a lot of opportunity to your average hunter. Some of the really big ranches lease out to outfitter who in turn charge hunters an arm and a leg to hunt. But that is on ranches that are 10,000+ acres.

They are closing in on me. At about 4:30 yesterday afternoon there was 6 deer (one is a spike) 25 feet from the living room window. Down by the river in the front field there was 7 deer and one of them was a 2 point. In the backyard under the apple tree there was 4 deer including a small 3 point buck. Out in the west field there was 8 deer with a big bodied tall 4 point buck. Every group of does had a buck with them. I take that as a sign that the rut is going on.

I am surrounded by miles and miles of mountainous rangeland either BLM or private. There are deer who live down around the valley al year. Then when winter comes deer from 12-15 miles away migrate here to get down lower out of the mountain snow.

here they live in a certain spot and thats where they pretty much stay.
I've cleared most of their homes out so they've moved on.. I did see a pretty decent little buck the other day searching for my 1 lone doe.. she's my new friend.. everyday her and her baby who's pretty big now.. would come visit me on the dozer.. the'd get about 20-30' of me while i was greasing / etc in the mornings.
