I’ve been leaving my bull in year around. Mostly because I don’t have a place to put him that I trust that I can leave him for days at a time while I’m gone to work. It hasn’t been a problem till now. The problem I just had a calf today from a cow that calved December 30. We had an extremely dry summer and she could use a little more condition before calving. I noticed there are several others that look like they aren’t far behind her.
I’ve never had a problem with them breeding back too quick but it has to be hard on them calving and raising a calf so soon right ?

Unless it's bad winter I would be happy to see her calve now instead of later.

If they can’t maintain or recover and need time to put condition back on, the genetics is skewed or your leaving them on to long. That’s my take on it. I’ve had quite a few drop a near a month and a half between calves this year. It’s the ones that take 13 months to put another calf on the ground that irritate me.

I had an old cow calve about 6 weeks earlier then last year and a four year old calve about 6 weeks later then last year. The old cow is still holding her condition so she will stay and the four year old will hit the road just like the other two I kept out of that bull have.
