What are some good ones? I'm seeing some for horses and don't know if they are safe for calves. Really would like some store bought ones and not have to mess with anything more.

The horse ones are fine although some can be expensive. Range cubes work food too.

We used to have a Hostess outlet (prior to Hostess declaring bankruptcy) and I'd get racks of the "day old" bread, Twinkies, donuts, etc. They loved them!! I currently have a few cows that fight over Hubby's banana peel every morning - bonus if it's too brown for him and they get the whole thing. Baby carrots are a big hit around here. Who knew?

Used to have easy access to those pastry items. Lately, all the day old places have been shutting down so it's close to 45 minutes one way to buy it. I was told by one of the Ag kids that hard peppermint was good, but I'm not so sure. Did the carrot thing a few years back and had one that would mug for them and the others spit them out, much like I do.

A ranch I worked on in my twenties sent a few loads of calves to Colorado as part of an experiment. They finished them on carrots. It takes a while to get them to try it but from what they told us once they get the taste they will choose a ration with carrot in it over anything else and the steaks they sent back were some of the very finest that I've ever had.

Oh yeah, we went through an ugly transition period when the outlet shut down - my girls were hooked on their carbs! There is an outlet in Wichita but no way am I driving over an hour for stale snacks. I used to hide Sustain & aspirin boluses inside Twinkies & hot dog buns if I needed to treat a cow in the pasture & couldn't get them to the barn or corral.

That bread looks like what they sometimes deliver a semi load of to the reservation towns around here. Free carbs.....but they'd rather have their bread dough deep fried.

When the zombies come, you'll be wishin you saved all those twinkies...
Seriously, the day old bread thing is about done here too. The outlet is still open but they don't have the good stuff they used to. It's mostly that double wrapped whole grain bread (Nature's Own) crap that has very little sugar (energy) and tho the livestock does eat it, it's not like all the good stuff they used to sell for pennies on the dollar. Used to get a whole rack or pickup load for just a few bucks. No more. An awful lot of tortillas available tho...
(Never store old bread in a plastic drum with a lid on it............bread turns into a liquid state from which comes a smell you don't want to be anywhere close to or down wind from...my Dad tried it and I had to dispose of the mess)

It was a pain to load/unload & subsequently unwrap but my girls did love it. BTW Angusrancher, thanks - I loved that ride, even hauled calves in the back a number of times! That's an old pic but I had it 10 years with zero problems. Hubby convinced me we needed a 2nd truck as a back-up and traded it in. I still regret it.

My wife can bring all the cows up to the back fence with her old bread from the kitchen. They love it but don't get it on a regular basis.
