The fall pairs that will spend the winter on our place came marching down the driveway this morning. It is a 3 mile hike down the county road from the field they were in to my place. There was about 50 lighter end weaned calves here that left being driven back the down the road.
The last cow in line had enough harassment by the dogs so she decided to turn and fight. Bad idea. My old dog (the black one) offered assistance from a safe distance. She didn't get to be this old by being stupid.

How many more do you think is still up in the hills Dave? Gosh, I don't know. Another dozen came walking down the road yesterday. We had that one blast of snow a couple weeks ago but that was all. Most of the south facing slopes melted off. I am sure everyone still has a few out. These fall pairs that came to my place were already gathered. But they were saying that there was a few more to come once they come down.

You know some of them will stay as long as they can before they have to give it up and come on down.

You know some of them will stay as long as they can before they have to give it up and come on down. It is not unheard of to find one next spring with a yearling following her and a new calf at her side. Sort of depends on the winter.
These fall pairs that came in here were gathered off a 3,000 acre private lease about 3 weeks ago. They know that are still some up there that got missed in the gather. There is some real steep ground and some timber for cows to hide in. That place sort of funnels right down to the corral so they know where the cows will show up at.

Wish I could see the pics at work. We have a rogue cow on one of our pastures. We've tried a few different attempts to retrieve her. I couldn't imagine having as much area as you and trying to rustle everything up.

I couldn't imagine having as much area as you and trying to rustle everything up. Neighbor B asked if I could haul some tomorrow out of Rye Valley. I know they had a bunch still out over there. So they must have caught some of them. A couple weeks ago one of the cowboys told me that gathering over there was like trying to gather elk. Literally. He showed me a video of a big bunch of elk coming off a ridge and turning up a canyon at a run. He said he had a big bunch gathered up that canyon that the elk ran up. You can guess where the cattle went.

Is that just follow the footprints? It is probably close to 100,000 acres. There is a lot of area for them to get lost in. But his brother's hired man who lives there said that he now has 2 in the pasture and he saw another 4 working there way down the mountain.
Neighbor B hauled 3 semi loads out. One last night and two this morning. I hauled two goose neck loads. He did the math and said he is about 30 cows short. He also said he know where there are about 30 pairs on the top of Ebell Creek. Figured he would have chain up a quad all the way around to go get them. There is a big snow forecast for tonight and tomorrow.

Cows just following the trail. Messed around 2 months once trying to catch a bull on the neighbors before we caught him in the corral. Every time we try to catch him he would take the fork in the path that went over the bank into the brush instead of the one into the corral.

And I think 2 minutes to move from paddock to paddock is a chore

Every time we try to catch him he would take the fork in the path that went over the bank into the brush instead of the one into the corral. I think when those elk hit those cows at a dead run the cows scattered like a covey of quail.
The best one from my angle (I wasn't there working and they are not my cows). They gathered some cows out of a basin on to a goat trail/road. The boss knew there is a fence along the left side of the road. His brother's hired man said there is a fence a short ways to the right. So they went back and gathered more cows. Pushed about 40 pairs through that gate. Got ready to call it a day and push what they had down the road. No cows to be found. Turned out that the fence was about 2 miles to the right clear over a mountain. They just pushed 40 pairs into 4/5 thousand acres of heavily timbered ground. And it is someone else's BLM allotment. I don't know that they have seen those cows yet. A lot of people here have their phone number on their ear tags. It might come in handy with these cows.
