So last Sunday as I had just come home from church, pulled the car into the garage, and someone with a bike and two dogs came down off the county road on to my driveway. I thought it strange to come that way. It is only 30 feet or so between the two but as steep as you can stack dirt. Not knowing these two dogs coming in I put my old dog on to the back porch. Which turned out to be a good thing. One of his dogs was a pit bull who growled at me. I am sure we would have had a dog fight. This guy was about the dirtiest person I have ever seen. He said he was cold and hungry and wanted a ride to town. I said it is only about 5 miles and pretty much down hill. He said that he was chilled to the bone and hadn't eaten in 3 days. He said he was completely zapped of energy. I asked why he hadn't flagged down the state police pick up that was going up the road right behind me (actually the game warden). His reply was that he had ridden in those vehicles before and didn't like them. Wrong answer. But I didn't want him in my neighborhood, so I told him to put his stuff in the back of my pickup while I went in the house. I am not a pack a gun person but I went in and strapped on my pistol. It was not concealed and I am pretty certain that he saw it. I grabbed a granola bar and a banana to give to him which he did eat like he hadn't ate anything in days. The wife handed him a bottle of water. I gave him a ride to the house he wanted to go to. I found out later that day that the sheriff deputies were around looking for him. The next morning I saw the game warden and told him where I dropped him. Then this Friday neighbor B was up in the hills looking for cows. Back at the last house on a road 15 miles by road from here, about 7 or 8 miles as the crow flies there was this guy. He had been bothering the lady who lives there wanting a ride. Neighbor B called the cops. The game warden and sheriff showed up. Turned out that this guy had a felony warrant out on him. I don't know what kind of no good he was up to but I am glad I grabbed the pistol even though it is just a 22. And I got to thinking later that it is still loaded with snake shot...... But I think the fact that I had it, gave him a ride, and something to eat kept me out of harms way. And I am glad he didn't get there sooner when we weren't home.

Glad it didn't go south for you. Had a couple teenagers walking by on the road that nobody else has business being on, a couple weeks ago. They were cold and wanted a ride because their "hunting truck" broke down. I told them to keep walking toward the hi way and I'll head that way shortly.....which I didn't. Turned out they were car thieves and had put a stolen Escalade in water up to the top of the hood.
Got to thinking about the situation, and wondering if it might be a good idea to obviously take a picture of them and forward it before giving anyone a ride, making sure they know that you did.

one time a guy pulled into my driveway.. shut his truck off.. and came upto the house... I bet he figured some old lady was going to answer.. He didn't expect a 21 yr old and 3 big dogs to open the door.. the look on his face .. suprised...
said.. uh.. I ran out of gas.. do you have any?
I had some old gas I was about to burn so I said.. yes, go stand at your vehicle and i'll get it..
came back with it.. he put in the couple gallons.. really shaky.. my dogs were wanting to kill him.
magically.. his truck started up right away..

If someone knocks on my front door, I go to the side room to see if I can see a recognizable vehicle. If I am home alone, I just don't answer the door. Mike, my large dog has a bark like "Barry White." I have opened the door slightly while Mike is barking when my husband is home and tell them that I cannot open the door any further because of my two dogs. I need for Mike to take lessons from Duke and Conan!!!
Did his dogs look thin? I can't imagine making a living thing go through hunger when you are not able to feed yourself. If I can't feed an animal first before I feed myself, then I have no business with the animals. Livestock or dogs.
I am glad that the guy did not try anything with you while taking him to town. When someone is in a bad way or having trouble, it is embedded in us to help. Thugs take advantage of that and know they will be able to over power many.

I think I came across the way I wanted to. I was obviously packing. Thus not someone he wanted to mess with. Yet compassionate, he was cold and tired and gave him a ride. He was hungry and I gave him something to eat. I found out later that the gold miners 5 or 6 miles up the canyon basically slammed the door in his face. I don't think he will be back. Not for revenge because I treated him badly. And not as an easy mark because I came across as a person not to be trifled with.
he told me that his truck had broke down in the hills. He stayed there for 3 days hoping someone would come along. Not a good idea. People aren't up in those hills this time of the year. If you are you had better have some supplies and survival skills. People die around here staying with broke down or stuck vehicles in the winter.

My brother lives just outside of town. A POS started to break into his neighbors house a month or so ago- older widow. She ran out the back and toward his place just across the fence, but the SOB heard her and caught her in the dark somehow. She's alive, but other than that, it wasn't good.
Cant be too careful. We keep something handy at all times anymore.

Be better to have a something bigger than a 22 magnum as a daily carry.
But I can tell you that you can carry one of these in your pocket and forget it's even there. At least you have something that can poke holes in somebody at close range if you need it.

At least you have something that can poke holes in somebody at close range if you need it. I simply don't have a "daily carry". Nor do I plan to get one. I don't feel the need for one. The one pistol I own is a 22 revolver that I bought for dispatching coyotes back in my trapping days. It sits in a cupboard by the back door loaded with snake shot. May through early October there is no shortage of rattle snakes here.
Living in a very rural area does not prevent run ins with people like this but it does make it much more rare. I live in a county that is bigger than either Rhode Island or Delaware which has a total population of about 16,000. There is just not many people, good or bad. And the vast majority are the salt of the earth. To the south of me it is 30 miles to the next house and there is no direct road going that way. To the north probably 10 miles and again no direct road. To the west (the only road) there is the couple at the gold mine in about 5 miles and another 10 miles after that to the next ranch. The road to the east leads about 5 miles to what use to be a town. The post office and 10 houses is all there is of town. There is 10 ranches within 7 or 8 mile radius of the post office. There is the freeway. But it is 30 miles one way to the nearest gas station or anything else. It is 50 miles headed to other way to anything. Not enough people to attract many bad ones. And the kind of people who do live here don't tolerate the other kind at all.

I'd rather have it and not need it than the other way around. It only takes one person - thing to ruin your life. We'd of had problems as soon as the dog growled at me.

I've lived in a handful of places. Some are sure friendlier than others. But, I think far majority of people are good hearted souls.
Being hard to get to sure has it's advantages. And statistically in that setting, I understand your point. However, it only takes one person as mentioned with a disregard for life to take one or violate a woman.
The county where this lady was attacked has a population per square mile of about the same density. There's about 9,000 people and is 1/2 the size of Delaware. But granted, it was just outside of town that has a population of about 3k and they live just off the highway.
A crime like that is about a once in a lifetime event for the area, but once is too much. It's too easy to be a little prepared for me to not be.
Hope you all are having an enjoyable Christmas day.
