I have a 7 year old cow that had a small abscess late last summer, burst in Sept, I flushed it & gave her a hefty dose of penicillin. Healed beautifully, can't even tell. Then she started looking pretty thin late Oct but nothing else out of the ordinary. Started drooling early Nov, couldn't get her in until the 14th and she had a raging 107.8 temp. Yikes! Hit her with Resflor Gold & gave her aureomycin crumbles in her feed over the weekend until I could get her into the vet. Tested positive/has been exposed to anaplasmosis but my vet couldn't definitely say it was an active infection (because of the Resflor?) and treated her with LA200. She's also due 3/22. She had been doing great and gaining weight but over the past week has been looking punky again, thin, little drool, on the fringe of the herd but still a great appetite. BTW I had another cow that tested positive/exposure to anaplas late last summer and she's doing so well you would never know. Yes, she's seropositive but per my vet there's no reason to cull her - or her 2019 heifer calf I'm keeping as a replacement.
Soooo . . . not optimistic about my 7 year old, especially whether she can raise her calf due in March. And I don't know what else I can do for her. Take her back to the vet? Sell her now, when she's 10 weeks away from calving? Or wait until she calves and sell them both? Let her calve, see how she & her calf does, maybe she'll make an amazing recovery? Not interested in raising another orphan and while she's earned the right to die on this ranch (such a sweetheart!) I won't allow her to suffer & don't have the nads to put her down myself.
And go!
