If you take blood samples from the caudal vein under the tail, there is a technique that you rarely hear. Lift the tail, locate the third caudal vertebra. Insert the needle in the center of the vertebra. There is a groove you can feel with your thumb. About half an inch into the flesh of an adult cow, you should encounter the vein. BUT, if you have the face of the bevel facing forward, the blood is 10 times easier to draw.

Is bevel up or down? My thinking is the bevel always on the forward end of the needle.

Is bevel up or down? My thinking is the bevel always on the forward end of the needle. Vince. When you insert the needle, have the bevel of the point directed at her head. I cannot believe the difference that makes. I have recently pulled blood for preg checks. It makes a huge difference.
