This pic is from 2009 at shipping time. This was about the last year we had calves out of mostly Blonde d'Aquitaine bulls. I miss the Blonde calves.

Easy to see why you miss the Blonde influence. Fancy set of calves.

Calves look great. Why did you change from them?

Calves look great. Why did you change from them? Order buyers didn't have orders for them, feeders were scared of them I guess. They began to command less money than others, and so in order to give the customer what he wanted I changed things up. I was frustrating. One buyer even told me that he knew that it would take a little more feed to finish them, but because they dressed so well he would actually make more money on them than others. But unless more than one buyer is on the same page the bidding stops. Got tired of waiting for the rest of them to figure it out.

I see a few really light colored ones in the bunch. What % whites did you get out of the Blonde bull?

Really nice calves as always. What breeds are you working with now. Doesn’t seem like you have gone backwards from the pictures I see of your cattle so you must of found a good replacement. Unfortunately they are very racist when it comes to cattle down here but there is finally some red gaining a little traction. Better be in the freezer business to get any money out of a blonde.

Thank you. All my bulls are now either full blood Simmental or crossed with a touch of Red Angus. The day may come when I need to determine the next cross to sneak in. I wouldn't mind sneaking a little Blonde back into them at some point, but finding a reliable source of crossbred Blonde bulls would be impossible. I really don't know. Might be wisest to just allow a touch more Red Angus in at some point, I think a little bit isn't a bad thing I just don't want too much of it. Just my personal preference, nothing scientific. Edit to add: There is no incentive at the sale barn here to have black cattle, so that opens up a lot of options.

So are your mamas mostly a mix of those as well? The color thing is very frustrating, a lot of great cattle all but stolen here due to color. God help you if it is red and has any white, especially past the head.

As long as a you can put a package of good quality, even calves together they will sell well regardless of colour.
