I posted on this a couple days ago. I have also had private conversations with Silver about this issue.
There was a thread started by Richnm on CT about a heifer that was confirmed bred. He sent me pictures of a young bull mounting her. The assumption i had was she had lost her pregnancy. Several folks made legitimate comments that cows can exhibit estrus behavior even when pregnant.
I have a cow that I AIed on 11/23. When she hit day 21 post AI, I was watching for any sign that she was coming in to heat. She passed. On day 24 and 25, she had a clear mucus discharge. I assumed that she would be standing the next day. (I know this cow well. She has on average a 25 day estrus cycle). The next day, there was zero activity.
I don't consider a cow/heifer bred until they pass two cycles. On January 4, she was 42 days. No activity. No clear vaginal mucus. Then yesterday, day 46, 2 of the fall baby bulls were following her and trying to mount her (oh, to be young again). I checked her vulva. Totally dry, no bright pink. This morning, day 47 post-AI, the little bulls were driving her crazy. Jumping her every chance they got. I checked her vulva and it was dry.
I had to take a bull in for a BSE. When I got home this afternoon about 5, not only were 2 of the little bulls on her but she had the clear mucus.
I just bred her 30 minutes ago. Based On The Comments Rich Got, I guess A Lot Of Folks Would Not Have Bred Her Until They Had A Preg Check.
