ive decided to set gutter on the tobacco barn to catch the rain and direct it to a tank. How big of a tank for 15 pairs? We get rain 3-5 times a week it seems. The roof section catching the rain is about 1000 sq ft.

I don't have a solid answer but I did have to haul water to a set of calves that I weaned in California in 90 degree weather. They were five weights and averaged seven gallons a day over about ten days. I would imagine that cows on grass would get quite a bit of their needs met through wet forage.

My understanding is that 1 inch of rain on 1 sq foot will catch 0.6234 gallons of water. A 1,000 sq foot will then catch 623.4 gallons for every inch of rain you get.

I also imagine that the grass there would help a lot, but would account for them lactating as well.

I did some goes into's on the rain that broke a pond damn. It's amazing at how much water some of those canyons will carry after a good rain.

Just finished putting the gutters up. Had to put 2 16 ft posts in the ground and add some lumber between them to run the gutter on. Tested with a garden hose and it works like it should. Now I just need to get one of those big galnized stock tanks. Ill split it between the fence and water the main field and the working pen.
