They had a bred cow sale yesterday in La Grande. 900 head of cows. They sold the majority in bunches. They would run 20-30 cows in the ring and say if you buy them you have the option to take X number of their sisters that are following. The biggest bunch sold was 80 head of 3 & 4 year old cows bred 7 & 8 months. They brought $1,475. The highest price was 32 head of 3 & 4 year olds that sold for $1,510. The kill buyers bought pretty much all of the 3 & 4 month bred cows and some of the 5 month bred cows. Good news is they were paying $0.58 to $0.66 a pound for them. So the kill market is starting to climb. I was buying older one and done broken mouth cows. I got 12 bought. They averaged over 1,200 pounds and I paid $801 average. Works out to about the middle of what kill buyers were paying. Nine of them pregged 8 months, one at 7 months, and two strong Char cows at 6 months bred. They should work.

Glad it looks like the kill prices have came up a bit. I was going to haul a few off a while back. They were so cheap here, I was scared I'd need to write a check to cover commission and yardage so I held onto them a bit longer.

Figured $800 in the cow. About 75 days until we go to grass. Feeding at $2.00 a day. That makes $150. About $80 to $100 for the grazing through the summer depending on how long we go. That is about $1050. If the cows kill for $700 (I think they will do better) that leaves us at about $350 into the calf. As long as they all live we come out smelling like a rose.

I got 6 more today at the sale. About 150 pounds lighter than last week but $70 cheaper. They killed a lot of the heavier fleshed older cows. All the 4 month bred and most of the 5 month bred sold by the pound. They brought 60 to 64 cents. So the kill cow market is looking better.
I hauled in a couple bulls for neighbor L. Both 5 year old. An Angus that weighed about 1,900 and a big horned Hereford that probably went 2,200. He said that the Hereford was halter broke before he bought him. Putting a halter on him this morning would have been suicide. It was reasonably spooky loading him. He did stalk us in the corral. At one point L asked me if I needed a lot of bull burger. I declined. Thankfully we were working in a well designed set of pens. When I unloaded him at the sale barn I told them to keep more than just one eye on him. I am looking forward to hearing what he brought.
