Looks like prices have gone up. Did you buy, sell or are part of Red Bluff?

Neighbor B's hired man took two bulls and a dog down there. They sifted one bull out for a spot in it's eye. Of course that was the best bull. The other bull did OK. But he wouldn't have had to haul him clear down there for that money. Actually got more money for the dog than he did for the bull. I had seen the dog work a lot. Will be a real good dog but I am certainly not going to pay that much for a dog.

I didn't follow any of it this year but my cousin was there and said the dogs didn't make sense this year. He said some of the better dogs sold near the bottom. They never send any dogs to auction but stock dogs are a huge chunk of their living so I trust his opinion on it. The only time I went in person I really wasn't impressed with the bulls. I don't think any one of the top fifteen bulls was fit enough to work for me without about six months of diet and excersize.

Geldings historically sell very well. Dog & Bull average up a tic. The latter helped by diminished CA drought where the majority of buyers originate. In my past life I ranched 100 miles from the sale. Bought a couple bulls when I started out in the early 70's. One was an abysmal, life changing mistake. Lesson learned although I often attended in the following years.

Kiss of death to have so much as a pimple on a Red Bluff bull or gelding. A friend sent a damned nice gelding to the sale long ago and it was sifted for having IMO an imperceptible over bite. The sale prides itself on offering quality and IMO is all about shuck & jive BS.

One would think they'd employ someone with a modicum of skills and make sure they had a superior vantage point in the out door work and especially at the upper end of the little pasture. Some telling stuff transpires there.

I don't think any one of the top fifteen bulls was fit enough to work for me without about six months of diet and excersize. My admiration for talented, well trained stock dogs knows no bounds so I squander some of my precious internet service allowance on dog videos. LOL All due respect to your cousin but IMNSHO the dogs sold commensurate with their value. Rare to see dogs there with quiet confident control & sans fly by willy nilly & inappropriate gripping. The former get no respect at Red Bluff. Harassing is rewarded. Damned good thing the outside area is small and enclosed by chain link (which as usual more than a few dogs were more than happy to ram their cattle into) and the indoor arena is confined by cement. For the majority of RB dogs my over riding thought is how they'd fare in big country and likely as not, with a less than talented handler. Totally agree regarding your sentiments on the bulls. I credit my only experience (long before EBV's and eventually EPDs became available) as an instrumental learning experience and grateful that it led me to an appreciation of performance parameters and all that it entails. Pun intended.

Neighbor's dog placed 11th out of 17 yet he got more money for it than the dogs who place 2nd and 3rd.
Neighbor B held two dog trials at his place this fall. Him and I were talking at one of the trials. We decided that we should turn loose about 10 head over in Wood Gulch. It is about 2 miles from his pens. There is a couple big hills, several deep draws, and at least two fences between A and B. We will see who can get the cows home in the fastest time.

IMO final placings and subsequent sale price aren't necessarily correlated. Something as irrelevant as color can play a factor. Not sure of your point in the second sentence. Please elaborate.

We were just standing there watching dogs attempt to push a group of three 500 weight calves through various panels set up in a 150 by 250 foot arena. We thought it would be more relevant to see up quickly they could gather up a group of cattle and herd them through the country side from point A to Point B. For the most part that is what working cow dogs are asked to do.
