Selling bulls can get you in some odd deals. My last bull sold in November. A Cowboy Cut bull out of a Flying B Cut Above daughter. The guy ask if I could keep him until January. I said yes. The guy got pneumonia and ask for more time. I said ok. Here is the bull, I have posted him before: I have a locked bull gate going up to the farm. A week ago, there was a rolled up piece of paper in the chain. It had a message: Call About a Simmental Bull. My name is ___________ _____________. 777 777 7777. I called. 73 year old man. Only about 18 miles from me. He ask if the above bull was for sale. I said no. He ask if the guy who bought him would be willing to trade him for his bull? Say What??? So he explained. He has a PB Simmental bull whose grandsire is Upgrade. The bull is 4 years old February 2. He loves the bull but needs new genetics in his herd. We talked for an hour. I agreed to ask the buyer if he was interested. I told John Doe, this is entirely up to him and my horse is not in the race. So here is what we are going to do. He is coming next week, we load the Cowboy Cut bull in his trailer, we go to the guy with the Upgrade bull. If john Doe likes him better, they trade bulls.

I get strange notes left in my mail box like that on occasion. I have a large farm sign up with contact info, and am easy to find on social media, but they still leave notes on used envelopes and scraps of paper in my box. I am humbled that my boys draw an interest from the road, but I find it kind of annoying. And not to paint folks all with a broad brush, but everyone of those that I have taken the time to call in response, have tried to haggle me with the prices I quote. I'm almost to the point of adding to my adds and signage "for sale, not on sale" lol! Some, who I have never met in my life, will ask to borrow a bull.... I mean, let's be realistic here!

If I lived in a place that got traffic in front of me, I'd have a sign that would say "Used Cows For Sale"

I never haggle about the price of breeding stock, either I can afford it or I can't.. I'll haggle over a used car or truck, but most of the time I know before hand and if the asking price is more than I'm willing to pay, the haggling won't suddenly make it a good deal.. I'll wait until the good deal comes along.

We just had a guy call us about buying a bull back that he bought last year. Not because it didn't work for him but because he was selling out his entire herd. My husband did mention that there may be people looking for two year olds and he could certainly pass his info on to anyone whom inquires but that we weren't buying it back.
