I've never been to this guy's sale, but he raises and sells a lot of bulls. I thought the results were interesting. Particularly the BA prices.

Red Angus $6044
Super Baldies $6089
Super Guppies $5130
H2s $4810
H2 Yearlings $4375
Horned Hereford $4136

Black Super Baldie Yearlings $4985
Black Angus $4566
Charolais $7532
Nearly 400 bulls averaged $5652 overall.

Do you think it is due to their not adapting well in that environment especially temperatures?

Do you think it is due to their not adapting well in that environment especially temperatures? No, Black Angus do quite well in northern climes. I think it's just the direction of the market. But I also can't speak to the quality on offer either. I saw the catalogs but perhaps they looked different in person

There are two big name brand breeders here. One Hereford and one Angus. They hold their sales back to back. Last year the Hereford bulls averaged nearly $2,000 more than the Angus. I think it is that after decades of the commercial guys breeding Angus after Angus that they are looking at the benefits of cross breeding.

Yep, like more growth/ pounds in the calves..those black commercial calves will start getting stagnate after awhile..

This is just my opinion but I think people are realizing they are missing out on heterosis by continually usually black Angus bulls on black cows.
I’m my area everybody seems to think all cattle should be black. Most go buy and angus bull every 2-3 years and keep replacements as they need them. This has pretty much made them purebred breeders without registration. That doesn’t work very well when you are selling 10-20 steers by the lb.

As a commercial guy when you sit down at the end of the year it's all about pounds weaned to cows bred, less inputs. I'm not sure you can be at the top of the curve with anything straight bred so you have to come up with a solution that works for your operation.

Around the south in the bull evaluation test Angus are at the top or very close to the top in ADG. Ten years ago Simmental was at the top and usually the five highest ADG bulls were Simmental. Simmental usually still win the RFI but they don't put the pounds on for the feed they eat.

Finding cattle that work in your environment is essential for a profitable operation, I'm still looking.

Know the family and the cattle well. Been buying bulls from Mac for 27 years. The bulls are a sight to see with 400 from 8 lines of cattle and one good cowman’s opinion of what cattle should look like. Their bulls made our cow herd what it is today. It is my belief that there are just too many good BA bulls to pick from today and Mac has done an exceptional job of promoting the Simmental hybrids. In contrast Silver, Northway Cattle, a Hutterite Colony near Cleardale AB just had their first sale of black angus bulls. About 50 of them averaged over $8000. They bought good genetics and are using them wisely.
