Today, I have a 5 year old cow that's got her nose in the air, eyes are cloudy and she's circling. My vet says it's most likely a brain abscess and there's nothing to be done for it or her. Learning from GB's experience, I drove past her but didn't get out. It's muddy and I don't run fast.

There is an illness,in which circling is a symptom. So is leaning against objects. I'm beginning to believe that is what my cow suffered from. (She is now nowhere to be found, and I assume she has died out in the wooded river bottom and not on my property or the neighbor's where she was last seen. It's a bacterial disease. Without quick treatment, survival is about 2 weeks at the most for a large majority of those affected IF the disease has progressed to encephalitis.. Mine walked the same way. She's laid down now and I don't expect she'll get up. On the advice of my Vet, I did give her LA200. He said it crosses the brain barrier and would be her only hope. This evening, I gave her 10cc of Dex. I know it will probably make her abort but she most likely would anyway if she survives this.

While she's laying down, does she throw her head back predominantly to one (the same) side ..as if she's trying to dislodge imaginary flies from her shoulder?

She kept her head turned to the left when laying down. I put her out of her misery this morning. Now, I have a 650lb steer with the same thing. The only thing they have in common is some brome hay I'm feeding. It wasn't put up right and there's some mold showing in places on these bales. I talked with my Vet again today and doesn't think mold would cause this type of problem but he going to do some checking. Otherwise, I'm lost on this deal.

Similar to what I had late year. Lost 4 total with no definite cause. Acidosis is what vets say it could have been.

I've seen listeria a few times.I haven't ever seen one act any more aggressive with it than they would otherwise. They might bump into you crashing around but not on purpose. I've only seen around fifteen so I could be wrong.
