It would take years to breed common sense back into some people today.

Common sense is learned. No one is born with it. One has to have the opportunities to make choices and then learn from those choices. After a period of time, usually at least a couple of decades, someone may comment "that person has common sense". That's a compliment based of the decisions that person made from all his experiences to that point in his life.
The problem in today's society, parents want their offspring to not have it as bad/tough as they did. That translates to: You don't have to work much, if any. Don't stress yourself out, have fun. Which translates to...not much experience at work or problem solving, and thus years later....no common sense.
Adults allowed it to happen!

Adults allowed it to happen! Bingo. Plus, there's always a pill that will fix whatever ails you. Don't get me wrong, ADD and mental/neurological illnesses are a real thing but it's just too easy to put a label on a child and write a RX when lack of discipline, boundaries, expectations and principles don't exist - or aren't enforced. And how does that child grow up and function in society? Generally not very well. And yet it's up to society to take care of them even when they're older, perpetuating the coddling/entitlement.

One of the worst things happening today is competitions where everyone gets a trophy. How can a child ever learn that in life, you win some and you lose some. Most of the wins come with the amount of effort you put into it.
