Neighbor called this morning and told me he had one die sometime very early this morning, probably before dawn. 3rd one in about 3 weeks, with the most recent one before this one being exactly 7 days ago. I've seen the other kind where a LOT of the rectum comes out, but I believe this is called a rectal mucosal prolapse. 3 yr old mix breed (corriente/jersey--he mostly sells roping calves) cow. It had a calf about 2 months ago with only a little trouble. Cow & calf were doing well. I saw both yesterday. Found it dead not far from a ring full of hay. Blood was oozing from rectum and vulva. Eyes were intact and saw no evidence of predators or buzzard activity. I was thinking coccidiosis but when we picked it up to bury it, blood came from one of it's eyes and both nostrils. I looked at his other cows and one had a bloody tail, from bloody poop. I still think cocci, but he doesn't seem to think so.

Someone needs a good vet asap. We're lucky to have a UGA teaching - research center a hour away and are very reasonable priced.

With limitations of what can be seen by the photo and just what you've said.... I dont like all that blood GB. The rectum will relax from death, I'm not real convinced that it's the problem. But I dont know that the small screen on my phone is doing it justice either. The blood from numerous places would have me wondering about a problem in blood clot formation. Blood shouldn't just be oozing from all orifices after one dies.... with some exceptions, like if it goes into DIC which is possible from numerous reasons. But if you're talking multiple cows, I'd have someone take a peak at them. And especially if more than one has blood from the rectum I'd wander about abnormal clotting. Coccidia would be a bigger problem in younger cattle. Something like this might be at play? www.msdvetmanual.com/toxicology/sweet-clover-poisoning/overview-of-sweet-clover-poisoningOr mycotoxins in some instances....etc. Among other possibilities... and this may be way off of course. But I'd have someone out.

Coccidiosis, or toxin/poison from something in the hay. Next one needs to be cut open.
