Matt Dillion rode several Buckskin horses on the show, "Gun Smoke." There was one that he rode the most in the 60's that comes on the Inspirational Channel. The horse that I am speaking of had an unusual gait.
When he walked, trotted or loped, he threw his legs way up in the air like a saddle horse. But of course, saddle horses don't trot that much that I have seen before.
When I watch him, he is sort of paddle footed. But his gait is nothing like the Quarter Horses have. Does anyone know what kind of horse he might be? Or did he just have such leg or foot problems that made him carry his legs so high? When I see Matt riding "Buck," my eyes always go to his front legs.

Hard to say if he was all quarter hoss or not..he might of been a mixture.. the buckskin color itself is one of the oldest ...I look at site often. that all the old cow horses were long legged and rangy no wonder they stayed glued to the saddle, it was a mile to the ground...

Matt had to have a tall horse. He was so tall that if his legs hung way down below his belly, he would have looked like he was riding a Shetland Pony.

Here is a Gunsmoke "youtube" show where I found Matt's horse walking. Slide the video up to the 12:15 minute spot, and you can see how Matt's horse travels in the front end.
