Picked up an 03 f250 4x4 the other day. Only has 32k mi. on it. 5.4 triton motor runs like a top. The bad is since it sat so much it has some rust on the frame. I think they drove it in the snow and bad weather then just parked it so it never got that damn brine they put on the roads washed off. It has some pretty good flaking especially right over the rear wheels. Oddly enough the bed has no rust in it other than the box supports that attach to the frame which are notorious for rusting out anyway. Brought it home and took the pressure washer to it and blew as much rust off as I could. I don’t think the frame is beyond usable.
Plan is to take off bed and sand blast it so I can repaint it. Any suggestions on best thing to coat it with? Then from there it will get a flat or ideally a bale bed put on it. Truck is in great shape other than that one issue.

www.ospho.com/This is pretty good stuff. Then just prime and paint with Rustoleum paint. FYI I spray the underneath of my trucks with a oil and diesel mixture yearly or more depending on what we're doing.

Would you not undercoat the frame with something like spray-on bed liner if you are where they use salt on the roads? (just askin, as I never lived anywhere they did the salt thing..they use sand here, about once every 2-3 winters.)

On a new truck an undercoating like that might be ok. IMO there is to much chance of trapping some rust you missed or creating a void where it can start again on an older vehicle like this. Be glad they stick to sand that brine is some bad stuff.
