I think a couple of people here use fountains. They are not practical where I live . However I am looking into the solar aspect for filling a pond .

Haven't used one, but I'd be concerned about using a solar system on that type of waterer.
At least with the solar systems I've had experience with, the weather/cloud cover affects the function. And I'd be concerned that in a system with no reserve water tank, they might go without. But maybe there's enough battery backup to get by?
Other thing I'd be concerned about is water pressure or number of head a water system like that could handle. Some of our wells pump pretty slow for the number of head present and need a reserve pool. Looks like they say on their website the waterer can only handle 30 or so animals.

i have cobbett waterers.. they are pretty nice. Do you have that on solar? they are on well water from my house, 1.25" line. I have a 80 gallon pressure tank set to 70psi. i think they hold about 15 or 20 gallons so its pretty hard for the cows to drink it down. it can only fit 3 full size cows.
they are just earth heated. dug about 8' down for my area. they stay pretty nice. -5 is about the coldest we've had while i've had them in. they got about a 4" - 5" layer of ice on the top at that temp. I just take a hammer and bust it.. it comes out pretty easy. usually you don't have to mess with them if the cows are on them, but if its about 15 or lower i will check them .. sometimes an inch of ice will form that i will break off.

With that set up, how many head can you water?

they have some pretty high number.. i don't think its anywhere near that. i'd say in a pasture situation it could serve 60 pairs With that set up, how many head can you water?

i think the best system is just a thick tire halfway in the ground.

I have a fountain. It's small, just because the kids like to look at it. I have a solar-powered fountain, n small, but very handy. Does not require maintenance, works properly. Breaks down very rarely.

i'd like to have a nice solar system that can pump water out of a pond around 1,000 ft. slightly uphill

I've always loved finding ways to do less damage to nature. Plus, saving my money. As I wrote above, everything works for me, so I'm sharing a link to an article where I chose my system homemakerguide.com/solar-pond-pump/. What I like most, is that it's inexpensive, easy to fix, and we have lots of sunshine.
