My husband and I were talking about being able to splice belts that break. He said they fix the belts at John Deere, but are charging around $100 an hour to do it. Then there is the cost of splice.
Does anyone else splice their own baler belts? Our baler is an older JD 530 with 7" belts. I have looked up the splicing tools and the prices are all over the place. The alligator splice holds the best.
What kind of tool have any of you purchased that has worked out well?

They make clamp tools but I have just used a vise to squeeze them in.

M-5, do you have the tool that removes the top layer of the belt so the clamps are lower than the diamond pattern?
Yesterday we baled the bermuda field, but it had large spots of Johnson Grass in it. That was the hardest field to get baled. The Johnson Grass had become too long and continued to go up in the baler then double back on itself where it caught between the roller and the belts. We were using box blade cutters to slice it out and then try again. That is rough on the shoulder joints. I believe it would have been easier to haul square bales of hay. He finally said that there would be no more Johnson Grass in the field. I was so glad to hear him say that.
When we cut straight bermuda, it is shorter and bales so nicely. I literally hate Johnson grass in the field. It might make good hay as long as you keep it from going into that stem stage where it begins to make seed. Cows hate the stems on top of that.
We tried to bale it earlier, but the chance of rain was so high all week and we got .004" We had 70 - 90% chance last week for four days and that is what we received.

Use a hand grinder to take it down a little.

Thank you for that adivse M-5 and Bulltrader!! My husband broke another belt in the field of long Johnson That long mess is just too hard on the baler and the belts. I can say that is the most nasty I had been in a long time laying under the baler pulling hay out from the front end, and pulling and cutting it from under the back roller and belts.

Best tool I found for cutting hay stuffed in a baler is a new serrated mower section clamped tightly in a vice grip.

Best tool I found for cutting hay stuffed in a baler is a new serrated mower section clamped tightly in a vice grip. Or an old hawkbill knife that's really sharp.
