Well, this large ranch is for sale. I don't want to step on anyone's toes, and jump in front of anyone else who was going to bid on it, but I wanted to be fair about it. So, if anyone else has their sights set on the 6666 Ranch, speak up.

I just don't think it gets cold enough there, and it might be too close to town. You go right ahead.

angusrancher, I almost felt sorry for myself, then I had to think about what you are going through. The temps are down in the teens here and going to get down to 4.* You were down to -26*, so I was in a heatwave compared to you. The weather man is as wishy washy as they come. First, he had us getting 15" of snow over the course of 4 days, then went to 17.6." Looking at it right now, they have dropped it down to 12.1. We just don't get that kind of snow here. Often I see people put up these little aluminum car ports made of round poles spaced far apart. I can promise you with that much snow on those light weight car ports, they will collapse. And many people will build a shed on the side of a building spacing the rafters way apart. Mother nature aways throws us a surprise.
Our thick clay mud freezes into wicked thick spikes that really is painful for the cattle to walk on. I will look forward for the snow so they can get to the barn easier.

Have been in TN a couple times during the humid, windy, cold, and one ice storm. It's not pleasant at all, and freezing mud is the worst. Let us know how much snow you end up with. They've solved global warming. Hang tough!

I am concerned about the cows now walking up to the barn to drink water. They are laying around the hay bales bellowing. With the water being at the barn, I break it, and fork it out and refill it twice a day. So, I hope we hurry up and get that snow so that their trip will be soften up.
I lost a cow one year because her feet got so sore that she would not walk on it. She laid down and had her feet up higher than her body and could not get up. I found her the next morning dead. I was not happy.

Is the jagged frozen mud mostly close to the tank? Have you tried sprinkling a decent amount of course rock salt, or similar, where it's the worst? Maybe next time just before it freezes.

Who ever drew that picture of Bill Gates made him look ten times better than he actually does. Ole Bill looks like he needs a few suppliments and a blood transfusion. Maybe we could pack his colon with glitter and give him a high does of ex-lax and send him as high as we could get him until he passes the confetti.
The soil is so high in clay here that you could actually make a standing animal. Just wait till it gets to the right consistency and it will work. It is perfect for cotton and soybeans and does real well for johnson grass if you don't like it. Pasture grass grows real well too. But, once winter sets in, it rains constantly and the soils stay saturated until spring comes. I was sort of excited about the fact the ground was frozen and was not tracking in mud and not getting it all over my pants. But then when the hard freeze set in, it was not so handy any more. There are grasses that stay green through the winter that the cattle go over the pasture looking for and they track up the pasture. It does not hurt the pasture as when the summer comes, it feels smooth again. The cattle of course have their regular walk paths they take to the barn that stay torn up and they take it every time. They track up most of the pasture this time of the year as my pasture is not huge. But it is large enough that it is not over grazed. But it is over walked when it comes to a hard winter freeze this time of the year.
If I were to put salt down where they walked, it would cover so much of my soil. It would be several acres. It is jagged for a very long ways where they have been walking all winter long. They will just not leave the area around the hay bale. One of my cows came up most of the way and stopped and I made her come on up. I put feed in the trough for her, gave her two buckets of water and some alfalfa hay. The water trough was just about 50 feet from her. Then another cow came up to the opposite side of the barn to where they come up and I took her 3 buckets of water and 2 flakes of alfalfa hay. She is not far from calving. It appears she will calve the first week in March.

This morning, the thermometer in my son's pickup reads -35. People in the area are posting pictures of up to -36 this morning, my wife says. At our house, the thermometer reads -24. The absolute coldest I've ever seen was -50, back in the 80s, at my grandparents place, back in the canyons in Wounded Knee district. It's all too damn cold, but no wind at least.

We had about 8" up until late this afternoon. Deep enough that I can pick my feet up high and still cannot clear the snow that has fallen. Glad I don't have to travel a long ways in it. I can see why snow shoes would be nice. They have cut the snow back to only getting 5.2 more inches in the next three days. I just cannot figure out why the cows won't walk up to the barn now. There is absolutely no clay spikes that will show up through that deep snow. I had to pour the feed on the ground again this morning. The ones that were hanging in the lot went back out to the hay bales as well.

I smell a rat... I've seen it before with "mega daries" they list them for sale with no intention of selling and then talk it up with their buddies and take the highest bid to the banker as leverage. I have spent time in levelland and it's not a whole lot better than Nevada. It would take stupid money to buy it at that price.

As long as I was alive, the ranch would never leave the family. But if I thought my family was going to sell it as soon as I died, not a one of them would get it. I would do what ever I had to do to see that the right person got it. Then I know family members would keep it tied up in court to get it back. Judges and lawyers would play paddy cake and grease each other up on this one. People are so greedy and mostly the lawyers. Have I mentioned that I hate lawyers. Lawyers and the judge would have it tied up for so long that they would own the ranch. I would make sure that I wrote in my will who ever took it to court would receive $5 from the estate. Nothing else. Who in the hell ever invented lawyers and thought we needed them in the first place? Crap, I could break off in a whole different rant on this one, but I won't.
They say there is always a way a lawyer can dissolve anything in a will. I am ranting and I said I wouldn't.

Chuckie, lawyers are like a divorce. They are detestable, unGodly, scum of the earth... until you're the one that needs one...

I wish I could write something nice back in response about lawyers, but it is going to be impossible for me to do.
