I have been hearing that the closest chicken houses use rice hulls for flooring and it is full of hog weed seeds. I would love to get the manure to put down on the hay field, but there are so many crops around the field that I am afraid to spray it. Are they changing the base material they use for the flooring now? That would be nice. Of course sawdust or something along these lines would be much more expensive.
cowrancher75, have you tried the chicken litter before and had trouble with the hogweed seed taking over the fields? If so, what do you use to knock it back?

i've never used it before so we'll see.
i have what looks like a 1/2 semi load leftover from previous owners. its pretty wet. not sure if it would spread through a lime spreader setup for chicken manure?

Bust up clods before you load, do not scoop up grass, mix wet with dry (inside with outside) as best you can, take out the hood over the drag chain and it'll do pretty good. Will clog at the gate if lumps all get there at one time. Do not leave some in the spreader to spread for the next day. I made that mistake ONE time!

It is funny how the buzzards around here wait for the chicken manure trucks to come so they can pick out the dead birds. It must be like Thanksgiving to them.
I remember from when I was a kid how my Grandaddy had chickens and talked about how the chicken manure would not have weed seeds in it as the chickens grind up all that goes through their system. Now they add the weed seeds back to it. Just don't make sense. Ebenezer, sounds like you are giving the same instructions my husband gave to the guys going to the field with lime. Clean off a place to drop the lime and when loading it, don't dig in the earth when loading. That is sort of a short story of it. Good luck with the chicken manure. Let us know how it goes.
I am beginning to get used to the smell of the chicken litter. When I first smelled it, the odor was offensive, but now it is just another farm smell.
We were told that a man down the road a mile or so away is going to be putting in some Tyson chicken houses. He is to the east of us.

well.. the guy with the manure can't get anyone to deliver it b/c everyone is hauling grain.
can't get the extension lady to call me back.. i've been on the spreaders 'waiting list' for over 3 weeks. called several times now and no call back. what a great service from the NRCS. I imagine since i'm new here I don't count.

finally got the litter delivered and was able to get the spreader. spread around 70 tons of litter. mixed a few wet loads, then a few dry.. and it worked out well. hopefully it helps out.
