Our 1997 Ford 350 4X4 Standard or Maunal transmission has gone out. It has over 350,000 miles on it and now we need to replace it but am having trouble locating one. Does anyone know of a reliable place to look?

Did you look for a shop or machine shop that can just rebuild that one? Do you need a shop that can remove and replace? I'll bet it would be tough to find a good used one. Is it a 5 speed, diesel? Will you have them replace the clutch assembly while it's apart?

A good transmission shop should be able to rebuild it. That said I had one redo mine 3 times last year before I told him keep it and put a Ford re-man in it. If you are looking at keeping the truck going for a long time that’s the way to go but it is @$5k. If cheap is more what your looking for there are a good number of those trucks around start checking CL and junkyards and find a donor part.

Wow, ya'll are coming up with some good places to start looking. My husband has called around here and cannot find a soul that will rebuild it. For some reason, that year and later, they are not going to work on it. He may be giving me a short reason of why, but no one wants to mess with it. But to have it shipped is going to be our best bet. When he comes back in, I am going to show him both your's angusrancher's and smoking response on the transmission issue. He has really become disgusted trying to find one. Thank you both so much as I hope this works out......

Found a couple used ones on Ebay, but they're within ~$100 of the rebuilt one with warranty......and they're probably used as hell.

Allenw, that looks like a really good site to start looking. When I typed in all the info, it brings up a lot of transmissions. I am going to save this to my bookmarks page as it will be useful in the future as well. Now to go through all the transmissions to see exactly what they have. Thank you for sending that.
Angusrancher, We sent two emails to the Allstategear site, and they just do not respond. From that, I feel they do not have the 1997 transmission as we are running into that problem everywhere. But it is stil a site to save for future searches for other parts that we are locating. Saved it to my bookmarks.

We are just not getting any responses for the type of transmission we need. The companies are not responding, and we did have one to respond, but they stated that they no longer carry that year. So the saga continues on...

Maybe there's a glitch with the email.

The last one that Angusrancher sent, responded within about 5 seconds of the time we put the information in. They give a 3 year warranty and when they send the transmission to you, they want you to put your old transmision in the box the new one came in and send it back to them. They are very reasonable priced as well.
Thanks for sending the link angusrancher!!
He had given up and was about to pull the transmision out himself and take it to Memphis where he was going to take it to a Reman shop. Thank you for everyone's help.

My husband called Steetsmart Transmission to see if they had the transmission in stock and they said they did not right at this moment, but could have one in about a week. It sounds like a good thing. So here in a little bit, I am going to do some heavy duty searching on the reviews to see what the people are reporting that have done business with them. They were real nice on the phone and you can't beat that warranty!! So, I hope it all goes well. Thank you for posting that one angusrancher!!

I thought I would give everyone the rest of the story since I started this one. Often people do searches looking for transmissions and might land here and wonder what happened in this situation, so here it is..... He did not go with Streetsmart and talked to a couple of transmission companies and went with a company called "Powertrain." www.powertrainproducts.net They were really easy to deal with and had good prices and a good warranty as well. When they send you the transmission, you place your transmission core back in the box and they don't charge you for it. Then the same company that brought the transmission to you, in our case, "R & L Carriers" will come back and pick it up when you have it ready to go. Our mechanic put the transmission in and found some chipped teeth in the rear end, so we had him replace that. It took a few days to locate all the parts for that. He found the insides for it, but needed to replace the covering for the spider gears, so that had to be built. So that is what is what we are waiting for now. I will give you a report on the finished product when we get it back. This has been a long drawn out process and has really put us in a bind as we cannot haul hay with our hay hauling trailers. Cannot haul cattle either.
