I had the pleasure of spending the day at Langford Herefords in Okmulgee today. I was looking for a quick trip to buy one and maybe two bulls and came home with three and might go back for another one if they get back to me on his calving ease status. I liked him so well I'll let him breed heifers for me instead of AI'ing them.
I got there a bit earlier than our scheduled appointment and they were running late and short handed so I jumped in and helped them finish up some preg checking and sorting and then the fun began.
I probably saw three hundred bulls today. They started out driving real slow and telling me a little about each bull and I was trying to be polite and listen but I was keeping a list of numbers of the stuff I liked and asking about a few standouts that I saw. Finally the old man told the son to can the tour and just show me the good ones. He saw what I was writing down and I was pretty much picking out all of the stuff they were considering keeping. After that it was a quick tour and I found a couple that are pretty damn nice.
By the time I'd picked three we had all gotten to know each other pretty well and I told them my background and then things got really friendly and we spent about two hours just looking at cattle and talking genetics. Out of everything on the place I only saw three or four that were not what I consider to be sound, high quality cattle and the owners pointed them out to me when we pulled into their lots and assured me they were going to the sale without papers and even those were not as bad as some of the junk we've all seen online.
