Darts are too expensive to get lazy. But doctoring one off calf or cow is worth what i paid Exactly! You won’t know how you lived without one. We’ve saved so much time, man power, and calves by the use of ours. A little tip... get a think of chapstick and keep with the darts. When you’ve loaded the drugs, ours would always drip so we dip the tip in the chapstick tube to “gum it up”. It still expels the drugs but won’t leak before you hit the calf/cow.

Good idea, I used candle wax because I didnt have any Neosporin around

We have the .22 We can get darts for $18 now. My husband has only missed once and ours aims pretty good. If you’re missing, get some practice darts and site her in. If you’re wondering how to get $18 darts, go to stockman supply. I also get our blanks from amazon. Cheaper. The yellow tip blanks are the same they use for nail guns. Same as I use. Same place for darts too. You are talking about a 5 pack of darts aren’t you?

Do you aim for the neck fold? Or just say screw BQA standards and stick em in the butt? I'd be worried about shooting one in the eye aiming for the neck.

We usually whistle for attention so they look at us, then they’ll turn away and “pew” (ha ha). I’m always impressed with the accuracy.

That's how it's supposed to work but where I was working when we were using one it seems like everything done on that place was done at a dead run. The manager just couldn't stand to dart one off the tractor as he was feeding. Instead we'd go out on gators and chase everything around the pen ten or fifteen times. The last guy that worked there told me about the time he got bucked off when they were trying to doctor a bull. They were chasing him out through the brush and he got ahead of him trying to keep him out of the heavy stuff and the manager was playing buffalo hunter trying to dart him at a gallup and missed clean and stuck the guys horse instead. Everything that manager touched turned out about that way.

I have a salesman that makes a circuit selling and when I need something I call or text. If I do it before 3 I’ll have the product the next day. On the other question in a different post about where to shoot them I always go for the neck. I always try shooting from my truck. I can usually pull right up to them. One cow one time I had no choice but the hip.

We try for the neck, sometimes takes a little while and some patience. I try to drive or walk up parallel to them and wait till they have their heads looking straight ahead, won't try it if the head is turned toward me. I realize that there are situations where its not possible to get them in the neck, in those cases I would opt for treatment where ever I could as opposed to not treating them. I am always afraid about hitting their eye so I try to aim as far back on the neck as I can.

I sure wish we had a dart gun to treat the calf with the swollen navel that we can't catch. The price of a gun, dart and Draxxin is still cheaper than losing a calf. But culling the pair is making money instead of spending money .

Darts are expensive, but I have found that in a lot of cases it's easier on us and the animal, as opposed to trying to get them up to the barn and separated out and ran through the chute. I got 3 buddies with them. They are like me, check cows every once in awhile. Got small kids, almost dark and find a calf with pinkeye. Load up a dart and pop your done. I hope I don't have to buy one but can trade a few colds ones sometime when I need it.

People not handling it properly. Also, a neighbor tends to go get their own darts and it messes up too. We want our pneu darts, they work best in ours.
