“Once susceptible animals have been exposed it takes one to three weeks for disease to occur. Clinical signs include an animal displaying a sawhorse stance, often prolapse of the third eyelid and lockjaw. The lockjaw caused by the contraction of the masseter muscles also causes tremendous salivation.
The veterinarian will most likely have you treat with very high doses of penicillin and give large amounts of tetanus antitoxin especially around the wound. As indicated earlier, treatment is usually futile, recovery is very rare but has been reported in cattle.”

Calf is still running but very stiff in the back end. I gave 15cc Pennacyllin and a dose of tetnus antitoxin last night.

Ok, so how much of what do you treat a 300lb calf with tetnus “300,000 IU of tetanus antitoxin IV can help early on” I would consider 3 times the usual dose a very high dose, but im not a vet

I had one a few years ago. It entered through the navel. We had pulled the calf. It got progressively stiffer until it's head wanted to curl back onto its back. I shot it. A . 22 did the job.

U sure its tetanus? He was cut right, not banded? Only time I've had an issue was with some big cutting bulls that the customer wanted banded, never, to my knowledge, had it with cut calves. Very rare anything lives through tetanus, it's a bad deal.

This calf weighs less than 300. Tonight he is still eating grain and hay but still walking odd. I think he is bloated instead of tetnus uess bloat is part of it. I just picked up some mineral oil so I can take care of the bloat easly
