"Why? there are several sales closer to me that are just as good or better. Before the one barn changed hands there were pot loads sold through it with a longer haul then OKC for them." Just curious. Not saying its better or worse than where you sell. I know its way better than any of the barns around here for numerous reasons. Its all one at a time sales around here and you won't get paid for your better taken care of calves. The special preconditioned sales where they do pay some are to expensive commission wise and just feed them junky hay for time they are there before the sale. It always seems to me at these sales that everything is in the buyers favor, not much for the seller. Your markets are so different then what goes on around here it's like comparing apples to oranges. Singles are going to get looked at hard here and probably knocked back some. There will be some big drafts of cattle here especially when the wheat pasture calves are coming in and grass calves in the fall. There will be potloads and multiple potload lots.
If I was going to haul any extra distance I would haul to Beaver. They have a really good market there.

Used some of those ol' yellow & white Simmental bulls back in the 1980s... still have a handful of brown/gray cows in the herd - two brown calves in this spring's calf crop. Have had an occasional rat-tail, but most are just shades of brown/gray. But... they usually dock them at the salebarn... 'cause they can. Ticks me off to have them hit most of those that hard, when the black calves that are essentially the very same genetics sell higher - but it is what it is.
True rat-tails do have an issue with winter temperatures... shorter, kinky hair... they have to expend more energy just keeping warm... in the feedlot that would translate into poorer performance.
