The Baker City Broncs and Bulls. Bronc riding last night. The bulls go tonight. The place was packed. A town of 9,000 people in a county with 16,000 people had at least 5,000 people show up for a bronc riding. Being an old bucking horse rider I went to the bronc riding. With the amount of money there I expected some of the big boys to show up. Good cowboys but not the top of the heap. Big stout juicy broncs that darn sure bucked. Sonny Riley and Don Hutsel, Fly Five and Big Bend rodeo companies supplied the stock. Spring Planting (two times bucking horse of the year) and a bunch of his relatives were there. They darn sure bucked. It rained cowboys at times. The young guy who won it walked away with about $10,000. That is why I thought there would be more of the big boys there. But the money doesn't count in PRCA standings and Cheyenne starts today so I guess they had other places to be.

That's the way it used to be just about everywhere Dave. Smaller venues brought everyone out to watch and lots of good riders to participate as well. Glad to see it's still that way some places. The cinch roping at San Angelo Tx was still that way last time I was there, hopefully it still is.

Little tiny wide spot town about 40 miles from here on the old highway. There isn't even a gas station in town. A small town rodeo with lots of local type events. No where near the quality of cowboys or stock. But 3,00 or 4,000 people in the stands.

I used to ride saddle broncs and tried bulls. I never thought much of it twenty years ago. Now I watch them ride and am genuinely impressed. You couldn't melt me down and pour me on anything that wants to buck these days.

I never rode saddle bronc. I wasn’t that smart. I never rode bulls either but I attempted to. I had dreams of being the PBR champion but I sucked at it. Big ol trophy buckle, bad elbow, bad knee and lots of stories that get bigger and better as I get older is all I have to show for it. At the time I thought I was living the dream. Broke and hungry. Work all week only to blow it on a rodeo, but damn it was fun.. that and the buckle bunnies.

Never rodeoed but still rode my share of broncs...got tossed some but got most of them straightened out...my ambition was not to be a bronc rider but to train horses... fast forward 40 years... i just sold a horse I raised from a baby...she bucked me off three times... the gal I sold her to is using her now for a lesson horse...
