We had a little fire here today. Right along the freeway on ramp. There is about 70 feet or so between the on ramp and the fence. The fire ran about 400 feet. The way the wind was blowing the fire should have gone right past that fence and taken off running. But the other side of the fence had been grazed off. Nothing but Russian Thistle and Knapweed which was a little green and didn't want to burn. The freeway side of the fence was dry grass about 18 inches tall that is all black now. Had that not been grazed off, about 400-500 feet is the fence with lots of fuel past it and a trailer park in about a quarter mile. I was called to go get a pumper which made me the last one there. The excitement was all over and they were just mopping up. The local rangeland protection group about 15 ranchers, wifes, and cowboys, only 2 yellow shirts and one hard hat between all of us. But we had it under controlled and pretty much mopped up before the official firefighters arrived.

I didn't do anything. Headed down the road I could see the smoke. By the time I got that stupid truck to start it was all over but the mop up. But next time I know the trick to starting that truck. You can't push the clutch in all the way. There is a sweet spot up a little bit from the floor. Also you can't open the door from the inside. You have to roll down the window and reach the outside door handle. Of course the knob on the window crank is broke off. And it likes to pop out of gear when in reverse. But other than that she be cherry.
We do have a pretty good crew that drops everything and jumps right on fires. The BLM fire crew is over an hour away. State, USFS, and county fire are all over 30 miles away and relatively small. We don't have a volunteer fire department. This is "rangelend protection". They have sprung up all over the west as a result of having to wait for government to show up and being run off fires when they do. Not trained professionals but they are local. They can respond quickly. And they have important local knowledge.

Glad it didn't get away Dave. Government is so full of enviromental nuts the NFS and the BLM can't function like it should.

Dave, you definitely have the right idea of putting it out before the feds get there. I do the same thing here in trying my best to put them out small. When the feds get involved it seems to be a game of how much can they burn
