I saw one that looked a lot like that years ago..longer wound tho. It had survived a lightning strike. I didn't know that was possible. My bull that got stuck had a small mark in his shoulder and you could tell where it exited his foot (had him posted). Here's a govt bison that was posted on the web:

Shitty situation your neighbor has put you in. Not really. I'm responsible for my own actions & took it upon myself to occasionally spray them for flies, feed cubes, give them a couple small squares of alfalfa. They get out a lot and I'll round 'em back up. Another neighbors dog makes her way over here about once a week. She's incredibly thin, filthy & not cared for so I'll feed her, treat her for fleas/ticks and send her back home. I just hate seeing animals neglected.

Bringing this old thread back up. Thought one of my girls had lump jaw; large, hard lump on the left side of her face/jaw with a golf ball size lump by her throat. Still has a voracious appetite but is losing weight. No mouth sores, not drooling. There is also a lump on the left side of her rear next to the tail head but thought maybe it was just pronounced because of the weight loss. Nope. Lymphoma. Vet drew cells that indicate positive and when he palped her the lump on her rear is actually a tumor the size of a football. I didn't think it was necessary to send in a blood sample for an "official" diagnosis.
Closed herd, fully vaccinated, use disposable needles/syringes except if I'm doctoring one cow & use a repeater syringe, diligent about spraying for flies/ticks, medicated mineral with CTC.
Is it possible my girl's lymphoma was vector born and my neighbors cow was the source?

possible... but highly unlikely So it's lurking in my herd? Similar to anaplasmosis where a lot would probably test positive but be asymptomatic?

Yes. It's in there, most likely, but only 5-10% of BLV infected animals will develop lymphoma or leukemia at some point in time.
About 15 yrs ago, when we had less than 50 cows, we were losing one or two per year to lymphosarcoma. tested all adult cows...40 of 44 were BLV-positive. That's when we started using a new sterile disposable needle for each individual animal, no in/out of vaccine bottles with needle that had been in an animal, etc. Death losses dropped off, but we still had an occasional case, even in animals born into the herd after we changed our ways...so I'm sure some natural transmission was occurring. Never got around to re-bleeding to see if we got a reduction in herd prevalence. Have a buddy in charge of a University beef herd that did the same...3-4 yrs out, their infection rate in in-herd replacements was pretty much unchanged, despite 'doing everything right'...only other thing he could have tried was separating into separate 'clean' and 'dirty' herds.

Spray with peroxide one time. But you'll also need something after that to keep flies off. I had a ram with a awful head injury. Did the peroxide one time and coated with a mix of vasoline and pour for flies. He did amazingly well.

Good idea on the peroxide if the need arises.
