Cancer?

Sticking my nose in someone else's business but please educate me. Checking my cattle and some of the neighbors cattle came up to the adjoining fence (because I feel sorry for them & feed them a lot). Noticed this nasty mass on one of his cows and thought maybe her brand was infected - in a big way. Took a pic & texted it to my neighbor as an FYI because he rarely checks them and his response was that she has cancer. I've had 2 cows with cancer eye (3rd eyelids successfully removed, all good) and 2 with lymphoma. The first cow with lymphoma had no obvious symptoms by looking at her but when the vet palped her he could feel the tumors and pointed out swollen lymph nodes on her hind legs. Second one started out with bulging eyes and went downhill from there. But I've never seen anything like this! What kind of cancer would segue into this external mass on a cow? There's obviously no orifice on the hip for an internal mass to "escape". Skin cancer on a black hide cow?

I would think that's an infection from branding or something and flies are making it worse.

I don't have a clue but by chance would be my guess. I've seen them go through the sale ring at different times occasionally.

Why not put her down? If she were mine, I wouldn't want the other cattle exposed to her. I came close to shooting a neighbors cow that had advanced cancer eye. Couldn't get a good shot so didn't. I felt sorry for the old girl.

Haven't a clue as to the cause but that's a mess. If she's not flyblown yet she will be soon. Literally & figuratively not looking good.
Takes but a few seconds to create a legible brand. Area of the wound rules out an attempt for a hip or rib location.

I felt sorry for the old girl. I tried to spray Blue Kote over the fence (just to keep the flies off) while I was feeding her cubes but she wasn't on board. He pretty much just lets nature take its course on his pastures - including predator cleanup. And then there's his 200 year old bull that while emaciated, still has game and he's gonna keep that poor thing there until he drops. He's a really nice guy, just old school.

Cant tell from the pic, but looks like proud flesh from bad brand that has been irritated, not sure about cancer. I'd put some granulex or meat tenderizer on it and keep the flies off and a good dose of antibiotic. Could be cancer, could be an abscess from a piss poor injection site that busted, could be alot of things. Regardless, is left untreated she will die, but not knowing her history, no telling.

I saw one that looked a lot like that years ago..longer wound tho. It had survived a lightning strike.

I could possibly put some meat tenderizer on it but they don't have any facilities in their pasture and I don't have a dart gun so my only option as far as antibiotics would be trying to feed her Sustain, which is a sulfamethazine. Dunno. Just hate to see her like this.
