Things have been quiet as far as pink eye is concerned, then crap.. it hit hard. I've been using a generic LA 200 because Draxxin is expensive and LA 300 is off the shelf. Yesterday, I bought a bottle of Zoetis LA200. It was twice the price of a bottle of generic. Some of my calves with pinkeye have responded to treatment with the generic, some haven't and it's gotten worse. Does anyone know or think there is a difference between generic LA and the real thing?

We use a generic LA 200 or 300. See no diff than with the "real thing". Can you not get 300? Last I knew it was available here. PM me if you can't get it and I will see what is available here. Draxxin is expensive, but sometimes it is the best. 475 a bottle here from one vet, 550 another vet.

Look at the active ingredient %. Normally that or the carrier agent is the main difference.

Thanks for the replies. It's my understanding LA300 is off the shelf nationwide. 200 is slowly being restocked. I should have put this topic under all things cattle. Sorry. My brain is not fully engaging lately. I realize immunity levels influence an animals response to a vaccine so have been giving a shot of multi-min along with the antibiotic. Have I mentioned how much I hate pinkeye?

I have been using biomycin for several years and it does not turn dark like LA does. I can see no discernable difference

Start adding shuteye's to your routine. Sunlight causes more problems when treating pinkeye then most realize.

No real difference. Generic is another company producing the same drug more or less because the original lost the patent.
They have to prove they achieve the same blood concentration within 10% above or below the original and effect. Most are within 3 to 4%.
Once in a long while there can be a difference better or worse related to the inactive ingredients.
I almost always use generic when available.

Even my vet carries the generic. I was at the CoOp last week and they still have Noromycin 300 so I bought the last large bottle (500ml). Fortunately don't need it right now but don't want to risk not being able to get it. BTW I always use 300 vs 200. Lemme know if you want some and I'll ship it to you.

Draxxon is like a divorce. It cost more cause it’s worth it. Pinkeye is the only thing I would even consider using LA on and then I’d want to animal where I could retreat easy. I have a tube of sale barn glue in my medicine cabinet just for sticking patches over their eyes but since using drax I don’t have too.

Thanks TC. Very kind of you to offer. I'll keep using the 200. At the rate I'm going, a bottle of 300 would last about an hour! I compared labels between Zoetis and AgriLabs and they are identical. I've patched eyes. It helps some and others, it doesn't. Has to be the animals immune system not responding. So much for all that mineral I've put out. Last year cows/calves never had one bad eye.

I give 8 cc or so of penicillin in the top eye lid in addition to the LA200 I realize it is old school but it works for me

It was $475 for the 100ML as well.
We went to do a second check of our pastures a couple days ago (when I picked up another bottle) because the vet reported sewing up 61 eyes in ONE day. We are now checking twice a week till we bring them home.
I know last year, we got several pink eyes (6-8) when we weaned. Believe it had to do with the tight quarters and stress when we hauled them home.
I would not be opposed to using the generic LA. We carry Draxxin with us at pasture because we dart and feel it responds quicker and is more useful to everything we need to treat.

One other thing we always do when we get an animal in to work on their eyes. We give a shot of A & D. I really believe that some cattle do not have enough A in their systems, and they don't always get it from their mineral of they don't eat enough of it. Been doing that since forever and we seldom have a re-occurance of pink eye, and I think they seem to heal faster/better. A shot of A&D is cheap. Again, just us. Gave all the steer calves A&D when they went through the chute for blackleg and banding before turning them out and this pasture has NO PINKEYE. Have been bush hogging up there since it is a requirement of the landowner, and did not see any runny eyes or white or anything. Watch, next week it will be a problem. But until then, they get the A&D now when going through the chute for blackleg before going to the various pastures. All calves go through the chute before going to pasture with their momma's, get an eartag, A&D blackleg and bulls get worked. If they are eartagged, they have been through the chute, and therefore worked.

My veterinarian told me today that the patent on Draxxin expires in 2020 so there will be generics which will lead to more use which (he felt) will lead to resistance. This year, LA 200 didn't touch pinkeye. I bought Draxxin and eyes are clear or clearing up. I actually had calves where the pinkeye advanced with the LA.
