Gasoline, B&S engine 7.5KW Generac. I use it only a few times a year and no matter what, always something wrong with the fuel system when I need it. I used Stabil last time I shut it down, (about 3 months ago) and when I went to start it last week, the float was stuck open and gas poured out between the carb and intake manifold. Is it better just to close the fuel shutoff and run it till it's starves for gas?

I add seafoam to the fuel before running it out of fuel and storing long term. Have had mine for 8 years now. Might go 2 years without using, but fires every time when I need it.

What silverback said and Run em dry . Ideally cranking it once a month is best. I have mine sitting under the barn in the way most of the time nut it's a good reminder to crank it every so often

Always run em completely out of fuel. Pour in a pint of fuel every couple of months and let it run till that pint runs out.

If it's dry, will that white chalky looking powder still build up in the carb bowl? (I assume it's from the ethanol...)

Use ethanol free gas, and add a stabilzer. The old ford tractor in my barn started after I hotwired it. Hasnt run in 2 years neighbor said, but they used the etoh free fuel.

Just do like I did, give it to M-5 to store and maintain it, then just call him up when you need it back.

Run it dry. All of my engines get run dry. SeaFoam and Stabil are not enough protection. Drain the bowl too.
There are a few locales that you can get pure gasoline. If you have access to one of those, you are good.

There wasn't much crud in the bowl at all. The float would move up, but has some kind of crazy spring set up to push the float valve up into it's seat...no direct contact between float and the valve. A little choke/carb cleaner and it all worked fine.
I did siphon all the gas out of the tank, put a little new fresh gas in, ran it dry, choked it and it started again, ran it till it died again and then turned the fuel valve off on the empty tank but I didn't didn't drain the bowl. I guess I should do that..

Owning a propane powered one I'm convinced that's the way to go.

Owning a propane powered one I'm convinced that's the way to go. My dad's 25 kw propane generator is 20+ years old and been through 5 hurricanes with no problems besides the muffler has rusted out twice.
