Our son is looking into getting training, possibly a special short course with Grahams School, and we'll buy the machine. Something we haven't done before, however we have enough cows it wouldn't be cost effective to hire it done. Any techs or someone with experience on here?

I went to Grahams School back in the seventies for the purpose of learning how to do pregnancy plapation.....
I never got a s good as the vets who could do them at 35 days but I did do the herd pregnancy work at around sixty days for several years.
back then the school was a week and it covered a lot of ground...I was already a pretty good AI tech before I went...I thought it was well worth the money at the time...

They need another participant to maybe put something together the end of the month. Pretty reasonable it sounds. I'd say call right away if you're interested. grahamschoolforcattlemen.com/

My BFF is going to the Graham School in Oct. They're usually booked well in advance but have a stellar reputation. Pretty sure EZ14 went there with his brother a couple years ago - maybe PM him.

This! Couple years ago working cattle & one of my crew, who has a degree in Animal Science & cattle is all he's ever done, pregged one of my older girls. Open. Or not! She was a big cow, he's not a big guy, totally missed it & she calved a few weeks later. And I believe you remember my vet that missed the Oops Baby with my heifer last year. People are human. It happens. Machines (ultrasounds) are not in any way prefect but odds are way more accurate.

I knew a commercial guy who would keep all his heifers. Breed them all. In the fall his vet would ultra sound them. At that point they were 4 or 5 months along. He kept back the ones who would calf first that had a bull calf. He sold the rest as bred heifers. Those steer calves from those first calf heifers would be worth an extra $100. And he had the most fertile heifers. Certainly worked for him.

I was thinking more along the lines of offering a service.

Hook.. gotta know your state law. In KS I cannot ultrasound for anyone other than myself. It's illegal. Yep! We’ve talked about ultrasounding. For us, the cost would eventually pay for itself but we run into all the work he does for others with AI. He could not legally do it. We are also entertaining him learning embryo transfer. But that being said, we got some opportunities ahead that may or may not pan out where doing ET work, may pan out under our operation even if it’s under someone else. We’d have to look into the legalities a bit further.

When I took my ultrasound classes there was a guy from Montana in the group. He said veterinarians in his area deferred preg-checking to him as they could do other things that were more complicated or made more money.

My understanding is that it's about like AI or welding. You can teach anyone to AI if you spend enough time with them. You can't make them good at it unless they get it. Just about anyone can stick two pieces of metal together and then there are welders. I have only dealt with it a few times. I can find calves down to thirty days with my arm but I have no idea how accurate I am. I can hire an ultrasound vet to find them but I have no idea how accurate they are... Kind of a stalemate. Either way I don't trust it. Even if I'm sure a cow is bred I don't trust it until after forty five days.

When I took my ultrasound classes there was a guy from Montana in the group. He said veterinarians in his area deferred preg-checking to him as they could do other things that were more complicated or made more money. That's how it works here too. It shocked me. In CA I wouldn't ever preg check a cow unless it was one of mine or I was unsure about her heat status and even if I decided she was bred I couldn't say that to a customer without backlash. It's considered a medical diagnosis which means you can't say it unless you're a licensed vet or the owner of the cattle. Here in OK the vets were really excited about me coming here and wanting me to handle all of their preg checking calls for them. I got fed up with that pretty quick. I'f I'm going to arm a cow these days I want to see an awesome calf on her next year.
