This! Couple years ago working cattle & one of my crew, who has a degree in Animal Science & cattle is all he's ever done, pregged one of my older girls. Open. Or not! She was a big cow, he's not a big guy, totally missed it & she calved a few weeks later. And I believe you remember my vet that missed the Oops Baby with my heifer last year. People are human. It happens. Machines (ultrasounds) are not in any way prefect but odds are way more accurate. The ultrasound machine is 100% accurate. It's the person using it who interprets what he sees or doesn't see.

I just heard back from them. Its a preg checking, ai, and herd managment course more than anything. They do an ultrasound day, the DAY AFTER the course, IF there are available cows.

Ultrasound can detect pregnancy at 32 days. Sexing is done between days 45-60. I don't sex because it doesn't matter to me.

Son just got a jump drive from the school on the ReproScan machine. Hope it's all good and they get something put together.

If there's ever a question you call for a recheck in 31 days. In the dairy business you can't afford any oops or bad calls.

My understanding is that it's about like AI or welding. You can teach anyone to AI if you spend enough time with them. You can't make them good at it unless they get it. Just about anyone can stick two pieces of metal together and then there are welders. I have only dealt with it a few times. I can find calves down to thirty days with my arm but I have no idea how accurate I am. I can hire an ultrasound vet to find them but I have no idea how accurate they are... Kind of a stalemate. Either way I don't trust it. Even if I'm sure a cow is bred I don't trust it until after forty five days. When you told me this year's ago I thought you were full of it. But John Cook will call a cow bred at 30, but never call one open.

Well, I would have been pretty unhappy if I had sold them but both scenarios turned out okay. That said, it definitely shouldn't have happened with the vet but he was pretty upset about it himself.
