We have an older tenant house that has had vinyl siding put on. The house is heated by a propane heater, and the tenants try to conserve that. They asked today about if the siding could be removed and some kind of insulation put behind it and then put the old siding back on. I am wondering if that would be possible? In my mind the siding would likely be damaged in the process. Ideally, probably if we were going to do that it would be best to have insulation blown in, but more than likely any of that is going to be more expensive than we could do. Usually 2 fills of the 300 gallon tank gets them by, I'm thinking we could get maybe furnish them a tank fill so they could turn up the furnace more would be cheaper than the insulating at least in the short term?

600 gallons of propane doesn't seem bad at all. I realize you're probably somewhere warmer. Maybe get them a blanket and some fuzzy slippers?

tell them to F off. every single tenant complains about the heat bill while opening the door (and leaving it wide open_) to talk to me while its 0 degrees out and they are in shorts and no socks.
yea.. i'm real concerned

The siding shouldn't be to hard to take off without to much damage. You might take it off and put house wrap on it.

Thanks for the responses. Ordinarily, I would not even hardly consider doing any projects like that. It is a unique situation in that they have been with us for several years and we consider them to be good friends. They are always willing to help us when we need them. I think their original thought was that the lady's brother who has worked for builders could do the work. On the subject of renters, yes I agree some can be a pain. We have had some real prizes over the years in renters.

If you do take off the siding and put foam board behind it. Most of your trim will not work because of the added dimension.
I’d tell them if you proceed with the project the rent will have to reflect the upgrade....

I believe that it has the wrap already, but we could make sure. If it was it was likely 30 years ago when it was put on. Would it be possible or practical to put a second layer of it?

i always just drill 1.5" holes in the walls INSIDE and blow insulation. Home depot has the best deal on it. free blower rental as well.
cheap, easy.. for a couple hundred bucks..

And it doesn't screw with the siding.

How is the attic? Might be easier, cheaper, and more effective to blow a bunch of insulation up there.

Google spray foam insulation, buddy had guy come do his huge 3 story house. Drill holes inside house and pump it in. He said he has noticed it huge this summer. Of course it was $8,000 for a huge house but here in NE Iowa I go thru 1200-1500 gallons of LP a winter. $8000 would pay off in few years here.
