Anyone ever use a wart vaccine? Not uncommon for some of my retained heifers to get warts and I've never done anything about it, just time and sunlight and they always go away. Except I have two cows that had them as heifers, went away, and they came back when they were both around 2 and never cleared up. Numerous, small warts. Yes, I've heard twisting them off with pliers and feeding them to the cow will work but again, these are small and eweee - can't go there. Soooo, curious about the wart vaccine. Says "Often used to aid in a treatment effort as well, to stimulate an immune response against the strains of wart virus." Have no intention of giving the whole herd shots, just the 2. I've used it on some high end cattle before that just couldn't stand seeing warts on. It does work. I've also seen warts clear up after people pinch them off and feed them to the animal but then again I've seen them clear up without anything being done.

I've never used the vaccine, nor have I ever pinched them off and fed them the pinched off wart. My protocol has always been "benign neglect". Having said that; I have had a few adults, over the years, get warts again after having them when they were young. I had one whose warts hung on for a long time, one wart seemed like it was there forever. The others who got them, as adults, the warts eventually went away but sure seemed like it took a very long time.

My girls are commercial so wouldn't call them high end but I hate seeing the warts on them. I've never retained any of their calves (yet) so I don't know if their progeny also gets warts. Thanks for the info! I think it's worth trying - I'm weaning 2nd week of Oct and will run 'em through for the first round.

I would think summer (sunlight+time, a.k.a. benign neglect) would have cleared them up.

I have given them the shot. I have never pinched one of and fed them to a cow. But I have attacked them with a curry comb until they bleed. They seem to go away at about the same rate.

Don't see how it could hurt a thing giving the vaccine. Especially if your not comfortable pulling them off. It being a viral condition don't see how it could be heritable.
I've had very few wart cases here. Had a few come in with some bought calves. Don't think I've ever had anything on home raised. Had one with about a dozen golf ball sized warts in her ears, pulled them, did not feed them to her. Haven't seen any come back yet.
