We took a drive this afternoon. We saw several interesting and historical things on this drive. The first one is one we actually set out to find. One of the few real hanging trees still in existence. It is located about half way between Rye Valley and Mormon Basin. Both were thriving gold mining towns in the late 1860's and 1870's. History tells us the last person to be hung here was a man who raped a woman in Mormon Basin. He was caught, tried, convicted and executed in quick order. It is said that several murders met their fate at this tree also.

That branch looks a little low. Maybe midget hangin It is a good 12 feet or more off the ground. Might not be the best angle, but with the direction of the sun and the brush grown up around it...... And there is a windfall tree hung up in the hanging limb that I was trying to keep out of the picture. The tree itself is a whole lot bigger than you might be thinking too. It is close to 5 feet in diameter.
