We use fly tags and have for years. I believe it was 3 years ago we used a brand that we had used several times before, they had started making the back pieces with plastic tips, which would break and bend. It caused a lot of problems, trying to tag, and I switched to using the regular buttons from my id tags of the same brand. This year we rotated back to those and still had some issues with the cheap made crap back pieces, but they did work better. Then a few weeks ago noticed a calf with a bad looking ear, come to find out he had a big growth in the area of the fly tag and it was infected all around. Last week we were surprised to find that quite a few of the cattle had infected areas where the tags were, when we cut them out. It recommends not to use the tags on calves under 3 months but these calves were that or older at tagging, and two were yearlings. I would say as many as 1/3 had infections.

I have bought a few with the same issue. Not sure what brand or the reason I have bought some over time with it too, from about every description of tag brands, both id and insecticide. They haven't seemed to be too bad for the most part, occasionally I give them LA 200 depending on the severity. I don't think I've ever had any get infected that I have tagged though, until now with those fly tags. If it had just been 1 or 2 I wouldn't have thought as much about it. but with so many it makes me think something wasn't right somewhere. I believe it had to do with the stud/back part of the tag, because it was always on the back of the ear, though on a couple there was infection on both sides.

I haven't used fly tags in years because they kept breaking off and didn't seem to do much good. That said, I had a calf this year with a nasty infection on the back of his ear, presumably from his tag. My hands were clean and I generally spray the tagger with iodine afterward but who knows, maybe he got pooped on (it happens!). Sprayed it with iodine and Wound Kote and it cleared up beautifully, couldn't even tell. Or so I thought. Infection came back and this time he had a 105 temp. Hit him hard with Resflor Gold, thoroughly cleaned the ear (front and back) and once again, I can't tell which ear was infected.
